Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)

In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

The “Arctic Week” is a one-week international conference that provides transdisciplinary approaches to climate and environmental changes in the Arctic. The symposium focuses on the personal and oral histories of fandom and hobbyist designers, their preoccupations, practices, and political economies. We are not only interested in the manifestations and history of these scenes, but also in how fandom themselves participate in the creation and distribution of historical discourse about the objects of their affection. Thus, we invite members of collecting and creating communities to participate with scholars in two days of conversation and events.

ICCA International Symposium

The question of cultural policies and of their convergence towards a single model - or on the contrary of their divergences - arises in a context of globalization. Indeed, many factors encourage convergence: the industrialization of a wide part of cultural activities; the polarization between structures that are both agile and open to digital technologies and more traditional structures; the global market power of GAFAM on three complementary fields : access to culture via search engines, distribution of cultural goods via e-commerce, digitization of cultural goods and services; the importance given to copyright enforcement; the role of the international art market and positioning of museums facing the evolution of this market (especially competition and rise in prices); public / private rebalancing, even in countries where public intervention is predominant.

La production des subjectivités en contexte de gouvernance néolibérale

Neoliberal governance and its structures, and dispositifs, are at the core of contemporary debates in the human sciences. David Harvey (2006) considers neoliberalism a theory that places individual freedom as the final goal of all civilisations. Private property rights, free markets and liberal democracy are the means through which individual freedom is best protected and society flourishes, according to neo-liberal views. The primary role of the state is to enforce property rights, while market forces govern the economy. Neo-liberal ideas have shaped global and national policy for over three decades, introducing the primacy of private property and market rationality in all range of public life from education to healthcare, from land governance to environmental protection. Workers' rights in the global North as well as in the South are devalued in favour of individual responsibility.

Old Ideals, New Realities

Le paternalisme a longtemps souffert d'une très mauvaise réputation. Marqueur d'une hiérarchie sociale, morale ou politique devenue insupportable, il semblait avoir définitivement disparu (au moins dans ses formes instutionnelles) de nos sociétés libérales et démocratiques. Depuis une dizaine d'années, cependant, le monde universitaire (mais aussi politique) se passionne à nouveau pour sa dernière réincarnation, le paternalisme libertarian ou le « coup de pouce » (Nudges) défendu par l'économiste Richard Thaler et le jursite Cass Sunstein. L'objet de cette journée d'étude interdisciplinaire est de discuter de cette nouvelle légitimité et de s'interroger sur les évolutions théoriques ou sociétales qui pourraient expliquer cette évolution des modes de pensée.

Assistant HES (Doctoral student) at Geneva School of Business Administration

The Geneva School of Business Administration (HEG-Geneva) offers a Research Assistant (Doctoral student) position for three years starting from 1^st September 2013.The doctoral student will participate to the project « Organizing, Communicating, and Costing in Risk Governance: Learning Lessons from the H1N1 Pandemic », financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation. He or she will be in charge of the research components dedicated to costing around H1N1. This comparative study will involve qualitative fieldwork in three countries, namely Switzerland, the United States and Japan. He or she will collaborate with a post-doctoral fellow focusing on issues related to organization and communication. He or she will have to write a PhD thesis on H1N1 costing issues and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Brender. The project is funded for three years.

Les outils de l'Evidence-Based Policy

Le Réseau des chercheurs en évaluation des politiques publiques de la Société française d’évaluation vous convie à un séminaire de recherche sur les méthodes de synthèses de connaissances, le 10 décembre 2012 à l’Université de Paris Dauphine, Amphithéâtre 11. La promotion des politiques publiques basées sur la preuve par un nombre croissant des gouvernements nationaux et d’organisations internationales soulève les questions de l’identification de connaissances disponibles sur les impacts des interventions publiques, de l’appréciation de leur crédibilité et finalement de leur synthèse pour éclairer la décision publique. A ce jour, deux méthodes reconnues ont émergé. La première emprunte aux outils de la « médecine des preuves » : revue systématique et la méta-analyse. La seconde, appelée synthèse réaliste, est inspirée des méthodologies des sciences sociales. Le séminaire de recherche, organisé avec l’aide de plusieurs partenaires, proposera une présentation et une discussion des méthodes disponibles (voir programme ci-dessous). Merci de noter que les présentations et échanges se feront exclusivement en anglais afin de faciliter le dialogue entre participants de différents pays. Revisiting the Gilded Age: Business and Politics in Late 19th-Century U.S.

Journée d'études organisée le 29 avril 2011 à la Maison de la recherche de Paris 3, par CREW-OPA (Paris 3) et le CENA (EHESS). Cette journée d'études explorera les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Cette période a en effet connu un très profond renouvellement historiographique, à tel point que nombre d'historiens remettent en cause le terme de « Gilded Age » (Âge du Toc) souvent associé à ce moment. Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même : la journée d'études explorera donc, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de ces développements historiographiques, les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays.
