    ‘Poetic translations’: Conversations across the plurality of Arts disciplines in Visual Arts Exhibitions

    A clear distinction between art and other exhibitions characterised the growth of large exhibitions in the nineteenth century. While art exhibitions were staged within a narrowly defined context of European painting and sculpture, all else was displayed within two broader contexts: specific academic disciplines (natural history, history, anthropology, design and industry, book fairs), and/or trade exhibitions. Since at least the mid-twentieth century, this distinction between art and other exhibitions has become blurred. References to the natural sciences, history, theatre, music, dance or literature have been incorporated into art exhibitions, while historical museums have exhibited art works, commissioned art interventions and utilised contemporary curatorial practices. The British museum, for example, hosts ‘permanent’ exhibits of contemporary art works in its collection, as do many other museums.

    Name of a discipline

    Where are ‘postcolonial’ theories and practices going, and what can we call them?

    Proposals for papers which reflect upon the disciplinary contours taken up by what is/used to be called ‘postcolonial’ societies, poetics, epistemologies and politics, are therefore particularly welcome, as are proposals which consider the ways in which re-branding turns, theories and ‘studies’ in the poststructuralist ambit have modified the articulation between social sciences, aesthetics and politics. Branching out from these questions, one might also consider the ways in which social sciences and humanities are inherently calling themselves for reconfigurations and displacements in terms of reception, and teaching. Possible topics or approaches may include decolonial theory, ecocriticism, queer and gender studies, diasporic studies, transnational and transcultural theory, critical race studies, World Literature approaches. A focus on postcolonial/decolonial/anticolonial pedagogical issues will be particularly appreciated, as they not only address questions of corpuses but also fundamentally engage academic and teaching practices. How and where do we (re)invent these practices when academia, critical thinking, and dissensus are placed under such duress, especially in times of crises?

    Science and madness, extravagance, exception

    Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture

    This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

    "All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era

    International PhD Contract 2020-2023

    Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

    The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies

    Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union?     Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and contemporary press, the ‘review form’ has been to present an understudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary form that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the evolution of “print-capitalism” has hardly been analysed from a theoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is certainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it significantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a slippery object of study critically.

    “Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

    Edited Collection

    This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

    European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968

    The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.”  We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

    Reassessing Bergson

    The thought of Henri Bergson (1859-1941), one of the most influential theorists of time of the twentieth century, has primarily been confined to the so-called “continental” tradition of philosophy. In the past few years this has started to change; his work has begun to receive ingenious reassessment from philosophers outside the field of “continental” philosophy in general and within analytic philosophy in particular. The aim of this conference is to capture this moment and use it to provide new perspectives on Bergsonian philosophy, expanding and reassessing Bergson’s legacy and producing a major permutation in the philosophy of time.

    D.H. Lawrence and the Anticipation of the Ecocritical Turn

    D.H. Lawrence has often been viewed as a post-romantic nature writer. Instead of looking back to the 19th century writers who influenced him, we propose in the 2019 Conference to consider how his literary practice and the philosophy that underlies it herald the ecocritical turn of the late 20th century. Broadly speaking, ecocriticism focuses on the study of the relationship between man and the natural environment, doing so from an interdisciplinary  perspective. It is concerned both with the protection of the environment and with the destiny of man, or of "the human", in the geological era called the Anthropocene. Ecocriticism is a broad term, pointing to innumerable trends: ecopoetry, ecophilosophy (see Guattari's ecsophy), ecoethics, ecoethology, ecopolitics, ecofeminism, etc.

The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.

    The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

    South Asian Diasporic Cinema: Encounters

    The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.
