For the launch of an international digitization and digital edition project, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of sciences and humanities (BBAW) invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (male/female/divers) in the field of Digital Humanities (Digital Scholarly Editions and Research Software Development).The position is based in Berlin, Germany, but includes regular work assignments and team meetings in Havana. The focus of the project is on cultural and scientific historical sources of the 18th and 19th centuries in the context of Alexander von Humboldt's American journey.

The Francophone press in the Americas
La culture et la langue françaises ont joué un rôle important dans le monde, tout particulièrement dans la presse du XIXe siècle, phénomène qui s’étend jusqu’au milieu du XXe siècle et s’est développée grâce à l’expansion des moyens techniques de production et de communication, permettant la circulation des modèles de presse et des sujets traités, ainsi que la constitution d’imaginaires mondialisés. Ce congrès est ainsi consacré à rassembler des chercheurs dédiés à l’étude de la presse périodique francophone dans les Amériques du XIXe et début du XXe siècle, comme journaux, revues et almanachs.

"Transatlantica" special issue
This Transatlantica issue sets out to examine how, in the process of creating new audiences for its products, child-centric media crafted a homogenizing vision of childhood especially compatible with media consumption. As a result, in the course of the late XIXth and XXth centuries, media has made itself the vehicle of adult norms and expectations about children’s tastes, behaviors and development – be it to pander to existing tastes and behaviors or shape them to ideal standards, some civic-minded (with emphasis on social adjustment, character building, or good citizenship), some commercial, and others both at once.

Insights on the Americas
For its 11th issue, RITA proposes to interrogate the links between power and media in the Americas. Several areas of debate can be suggested, although they should not be considered as exclusive. Articles making a critical analysis of official media as well as opposition media, in varied historical and geographical contexts, will of course be welcome. Other articles may deal with the treatment of popular movements by the media. Critical reflections on the relationship between media and economic power are also encouraged. The Thema section can also include analysis of the current diversification of information media by focusing, for instance, on the emergence of “alternative” media on the Internet, or on the power of fake news over the construction of collective representations.

New perspectives on the concept of authorship, 1700-1900
The goal of this conference is to reassess, challenge, and enlarge the concept of authorship, by giving the author a post-mortem of sorts. To do this, we want to bring together fresh and critical historiographical perspectives on the concept of authorship, and challenge participants to think in comparative and transnational frameworks. Ideally, we seek to draw together work from a wide variety of sub-disciplines, creating a dialogue which connects often-separated fields such as book history and literary history.

Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

When the Argentine Roberto Fontanarrosa passed away in 2007, a national day of mourning was declared and his funeral was attended by thousands. Although Fontanarrosa was much loved and both the man and his works have received public recognition time and again, there are very few published academic works on his œuvre to this day. En 2009, la journée d’étude internationale des doctorants du CHCSC de l'Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines est consacrée aux représentations médiatiques de l'homme politique (XVIIIe-XXIe siècle). Spots de campagne, allocutions présidentielles, biographies, affiches électorales... Les hommes politiques sont source d'un imaginaire qui fascine les médias et leur public. Cette journée d'étude invite à s'interroger sur la perception commune de l'homme de pouvoir, ses mécanismes et sa charge symbolique, sur les modalités de vulgarisation de la chose publique par les médias de masse, ainsi que la force et la pérennité des représentations comme terreau des identités nationales. Elle s'inscrit dans l'histoire culturelle internationale du politique et propose une réflexion sur le discours et l'image (fixe et animée) du pouvoir. Propositions avant le 31 decembre 2008.
