The transformations of Literature and Art Criticism in periodicals between the 18th and the 21st century
Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and contemporary press, the ‘review form’ has been to present an understudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary form that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the evolution of “print-capitalism” has hardly been analysed from a theoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is certainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it significantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a slippery object of study critically.

The Fondazione 1563 per l'Arte e la Cultura della Compagnia di San Paolo invites scholars who are younger than 40, active in the disciplines of history, art history, architecture and literature and who hold a Ph.D., a certificate of specialization, a 2nd level master’s, or are enrolled in the second year of such study courses to apply to participate in the Summer School Rethinking the Baroque (XVII and XVIII centuries). New historical andcritical perspectives. The courses of the Summer School will all be taught in Italian. The participation in the Summer School is free.

Construction Techniques and Writings on Architecture in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe
Thematic issue of the journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press)
The 2020 issue of the open access journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press) aims to examine, through selected case studies, the complex relationship between construction practices and architectural writings in Renaissance and early modern Europe. Situated at the crossroads of several disciplines (architectural history, history of science and technology, history of literature), the subject can be approached from different perspectives. To begin with, confrontations of texts on construction techniques with the material realities of extant buildings may reveal, for specific contexts, to what extent these texts operated as vehicles for the transmission of technical know-how, and how much weight they gave to topoi borrowed from ancient authors.

This interdisciplinary conference discusses the cultural role of European folding fans in art, fashion, and material culture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The conference aims to take a closer look at the pictorial and intermedial interplay of or- namental patterns, figurative elements, and artistic subject matters against the background of European fan manufacture, artistic net- works and international trade. Furthermore, it seeks to closer examine fans as gender-specific instruments of gesture and communication.

All the Beauty of the World. The European Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)
In the wake of the Western expansion, a fast growing number of non-European artefacts entered the European market. They initially made their way into princely cabinets of curiosities. Enabled by the forced opening and exploitation of more and more parts of the world and pushed by social and technological changes of the time, the 18th century brought a boom of the market of non-European artefacts in Europe. This came along with the emergence of a broader collecting culture and the development of a rich museumscape. This market and its development in terms of methods and places of exchange and monetary and ideological value of the objects are in the focus of an international symposium that will take place in October 2016 in Berlin.

Science, Nature and Art in the Time of the Baroque

With the birth of the “new science” in the wake of Bacon, the theories on the world and nature ceased being essentially poetic –as they were considered in the long inherited mediaeval tradition– and began to be felt as essentially scientific. Modern science and the development of the artistic culture of the Baroque came hand in hand and became the cornerstones of the history of European culture. In this modern science, the discovery of the foundations of nature led to questions on the relationship between people and the natural environment, which went beyond living nature to open up new avenues to the theories of light and colour, space and time, as expressed in the creative brilliance of Velázquez in the gardens of Villa Medicis.

Fabrications: Designing for Silk in the Eighteenth Century
Joubert de la Hiberderie’s Le Dessinateur d’étoffes d’or, d’argent, et de soie (1765) was the first book to be published on textile design in Europe. In preparation for the publication of an English translation and critical edition of the text this one day conference calls for papers that will analyse, critique, contextualise, review or otherwise engage with the Le dessinateur in the light of its themes: production, design, technology, education, botany and art. Joubert’s manual argues for both a liberal and a technological education for the ideal designer. Such a person must, he argues, have detailed knowledge of the materials, technologies and traditions of patterned silk in order successfully to propose new designs; he or she must also have taste and an eye for beauty, which call, he says, for travel in order to see both the beauties of nature and those of art gathered in the gardens and galleries of Paris and the île de France.

Appel à contributions pour une journée d’étude organisée par le Centre d’histoire des Techniques et de l’Environnement (CDHTE, CNAM) et l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) : traduire l’architecture (XVIIe-XIXe siècle). Cette journée d’étude organisée le 15 décembre 2011 par le CDHTE et l’INHA fait suite à une première journée sur le même thème qui s’est tenue le 13 novembre 2010. Une troisième journée est prévue en septembre 2012. Ce cycle donnera lieu à une publication. Call for Papers: Translating Architecture (XVIIth-XIXth centuries). A conference organised by the Centre for the History of Techniques and the Environment (CDHTE, CNAM) and the National Institute of Art History (INHA). This conference, organised for December 15 2011 by the CDHTE and the INHA, follows an initial conference on the same theme that took place on November 13 2010. A third conference is planned for September 2012. The conference series will lead to a publication. -

Art and Sociability in the Eighteenth-Century, 1715-1815
Au XVIIIe siècle, la sphère publique émergente, composée de lieux comme les académies, les salons littéraires ou bien les loges maçonniques, a constitué la scène sur laquelle s'est jouée la sociabilité. La publication de Thomas Crow, Painters and Public Life in Eighteenth-Century Paris, a incité les historiens de l’art à comprendre le rôle des artistes dans la sphère publique. Ce colloque a pour but d’analyser la sociabilité dans le monde artistique du XVIIIe siècle à travers le prisme des pratiques sociales. Le colloque aura lieu à l’I. N. H. A., à Paris, les 23-24-25 juin 2011 et sera ouvert aux différentes disciplines issues des sciences humaines : histoire de l’art, histoire, anthropologie, philosophie, littérature et sociologie puisqu’il s’agit de confronter les différentes approches de ces disciplines pour traiter notre sujet et explorer les relations qu’elles entretiennent les unes avec les autres. -

Sir Joshua Reynolds: What's New ?
Ce colloque est le premier événement scientifique organisé en Suisse autour de la carrière, de l’oeuvre et de l’univers de Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Il est aussi l’un des premiers, depuis la dernière grande exposition rétrospective consacré au premier Président de la RoyalAcademy, à Londres et à Paris (1986), à faire le point des recherches et des travaux les plus récents sur le peintre et son temps. Dans le cadre d’un lieu de rencontres et d’échanges entreles chercheurs et le grand public, il s’agira de permettre aux spécialistes confirmés ainsi qu’aux jeunes chercheurs de se rencontrer, de comparer leurs analyses et de croiser leurs réflexions autour d’un peintre autour duquel de nombreuses questions restent en suspens ou discutées. -

Comment les différentes disciplines, d'histoire de l'art, de littérature et de civilisations anglophones ou encore d'esthétique ou d'histoire répondent ces cette problématique commune ? -

A mesure qu'ils découvrent et rencontrent des peuples nouveaux au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, les Anglais sont conduits à s'interroger en retour sur leur propre identité. C'est la question du dialogue entre le soi et l'autre, celle de la perception de l'altérité, et de la construction d'une identité nationale par le jeu du regard, de la mise en miroir ou de l'opposition que ce numéro spécial de la revue LISA e-journal se propose d'explorer. Il s'agira notamment d'étudier la façon dont se déploient l'imaginaire de l'identité et celui de l'altérité dans la littérature et les arts visuels aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Tous les types d'approche théorique sont les bienvenus. -
