Difference, diversity, diffraction: confronting hegemonies and dispossessions

10th European Feminist Research Conference

The overall theme of the conference is “Difference, Diversity, Diffraction: Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions”, which refers to a topic central to Gender Studies: the social construction of difference and inequality on the one hand, and the recognition of marginalised experiences and subject positions on the other. In the face of growing right-wing populist movements, anti-feminist and anti-queer backlash, forced migration, austerity and climate change, these concerns take on renewed relevance. The subtitle “Confronting Hegemonies and Dispossessions” is a call to reflect on, challenge and defy the hierarchies, subjugations and deprivations that are linked to structural differentiations and to find affirmative ways of dealing with difference , diversity and diffraction. The conference is committed to promoting a feminist anti-racist accessible space for all genders.

Nouvelle-Caledonie et l'imagination intellectuelle

This symposium co-convened by Scott Robertson (ANU) and Ingrid Sykes (La Trobe University) will draw together leading researchers from a variety of different backgrounds to discuss the way in which contemporary and historical New Caledonia reconfigures our understandings of key-defining areas of Western humanities and social scientific thought. Terminologies of Women and Gender in Transnational Perspective”. GENiUS is an informal Swiss-Arab Network of academics specialized in the field of Gender Studies in and on the Arab region that aims at fostering scientific exchange on the levels of research, teaching and institution building.

Les trajectoires d’Octobre 1917 : Origines, échos et modèles de la révolution

Autour d’Octobre 1917, nous proposons de faire dialoguer les historiens de 1917, à même d’apporter des éléments nouveaux d’interprétation et d’analyse de ce mouvement révolutionnaire dans l’Empire russe, avec des chercheurs travaillant sur d’autres aires et des périodes ultérieures, confrontés eux aussi à la question de 1917 dans l’analyse et l’interprétation de mouvements révolutionnaires. Pour mener à bien cette entreprise de croisement des recherches, nous organisons un colloque du 19 au 21 octobre 2017, auquel seront invités des chercheurs de différentes disciplines et spécialistes de divers espaces.

Bilan et perspectives

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

To say it more concretely, we will try to share our different fieldwork approach and theoretical understanding of widely used concepts such as, for example, civil society, labor movements, environmental protest… We will try to analyze the interactions between social protest and the media, the state, political parties, industries, etc.

Nationalisations et le contrôle de l'État

Les présentations explorent le droit colonial vis-à-vis du waqf en tant qu'institution mais aussi les propriétés leur appartenant dans le monde musulman avant l'indépendence des pays colonisés. Dans l'objectif d'étudier le droit qui s'y adaptait ou qui s'adaptait par rapport au waqf, les contributions se concentrent sur des mécanismes légaux innovateurs ou des discussions qui ont eu lieu dans les pays concernés à l'égard du statu quo de waqf au moment des interventions coloniales à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle.
