Mendicants on the Margins

The symposium aims to bring together researchers working on aspects of mendicant orders traditionally considered as “marginal”, be it in geographical, topographical, gendered or historical terms, in order to go beyond the artificial construct of centrality and marginality, and get a fuller understanding of the impact of the mendicants on all levels of medieval society across Europe.

Le contrat proposé est d'une durée de 18 mois, temps plein, à partir du 1er mars 2018.

New approches to Ruskin on Art and Architecture

En prévision du bicentenaire de la naissance de John Ruskin en 2019, ce colloque permettra de rassembler, de présenter et d'échanger de nouvelles approches de la part de jeunes chercheurs à propos du travail de John Ruskin, à la fois critique d'art, théoricien, historien d'art, artiste et commentateur du XIX^e siècle avec une attention particulière sur son travail concernant l'art et l'architecture compris pour constituer le noyau central des engagements de Ruskin en terme de société et d'expérience.

Male bonds in nineteenth-century art

Male Bonds is a two-day international conference that aims to explore the place of male bonds in nineteenth-century artistic practice and visual arts. The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

Toward a Geography of Architectural Criticism

Disciplinary Boundaries and Shared Territories

The research project Mapping.Crit.Arch: Architectural criticism 20^th and 21^st centuries, a cartography, funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, aims to develop a field of research on the history of architectural criticism, from the last decades of the 19^th century to the present day. It is based on an international network of scholars, whose interests cover the history of architectural criticism at various levels and through different approaches (including architectural theory, history of preservation, historiography of architecture, history of architectural periodicals and of criticism, history of photography).

Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology in Soviet Film and Culture

By maintaining the tension between artists’ imaginative approaches to technology in the Soviet Union (Meyerhold’s Biomechanics), film directors’ use of science such as physiology (Eisenstein’s Expressive Movement), and scientists’ own theorization of art history (Lev Vygotsky’s The Psychology of Art), this workshop aims at unpacking the historical and political forces behind Soviet film theory, film practice, and art history in relation to science and technology. While examining the juncture between art, science, and technology in post-Revolutionary Russia, with a focus on the avant-garde period until the death of Joseph Stalin, cinema is thus considered as a device beyond its medium of film (Francois Albera, Maria Tortajada: Cinema Beyond Film) and the medium-specificity of the arts is called into question.

Crossing the past: Medieval (and Early Modern) Brno and Olomouc in transition

The Summer School "Crossing the past" aims for a discussion about different (national art historical narratives of a specific late medieval corpus in Moravia. It provides the opportunity for young international scholars to meet the material reality of one of the most important medieval centers of the transalpine Europe, often marginalized in research, not only due to the linguistic barrier. The goal of the school is a close and direct examination of the on-site monuments and art objects, and secondly, a critical reflection about the diverse narratives and meta-narratives existing about these monuments.

The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.
