    Conference, symposium - Law

Legal data mining, machine learning and visualization

The aim of the conference is to structure a conversation on both the fundamental and practical issues on legal data mining and machine learning between scientists and professionals from artificial Intelligence, data science, law, and logic. The Legal Data Mining, Machine Learning and Visualization conference will explore the specific technical challenges from data mining and machine learning technique addressing together practical and legal theoretical issues. It is an opportunity for computer scientists to showcase and explore in conversation with lawyers further developments in AI and data-mining applied to the legal domains. Legal academics specializing in the interface of law and AI are given the opportunity to articulate the challenges of automated functions in law including in natural language processing applied to law, information extraction from legal databases and texts and data mining applied for legal analytics.

Freedom of Speech: from Opacity to Transparency

Contemporary societies value free speech and freedom of expression on the most personal – if not intimate – and sensitive issues. What happens to the right to remain silent and resisting the pressure? Qualitative surveys conducted through interviews are one of the most frequently used methods in the social sciences, if not the most used, and go far beyond simple and straightforward conversations. This research tool requires skill, subtlety and sensitivity, and one learns to a great extent from experience.

    Summer School - Science studies

Understanding and stimulating social sciences and humanities impact and engagement with society

    Training school

This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

    Conference, symposium - History

    Tracing mobilities and socio-political activism

    19th-20th centuries

This doctoral workshop will explore to what extent the notion of “mobility” in current cultural and social theory (eg. Stephen Greenblatt, John Urry) can be fruitfully applied in historical research. Mobilities can be seen as cross-border movements of persons, objects, texts and ideas.

    Snapshots of Change

Assessing Social Transformations in Qualitative Research

The study of “change” is a central research topic in social science. However, how can we concretely assess social change when we conduct qualitative research which is based on case studies, and has a limited scope of inquiry both in terms of time and space? This international workshop seeks to address this key methodological issue through an interdisciplinary dialogue. On the basis of concrete empirical examples, we would like to focus on the available means that enable us to overcome obstacles encountered when studying change through qualitative research.

Visibilities. Multiple Orders and Practices through Visual Discourse Analysis and Beyond

Special issue of the peer-reviewed multilingual online journal Forum Qualitative Research/Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung (FQS). The texts in this volume will be dedicated to understanding the practices, the types of power relations and the technological infrastructures in which practices of visualising and orders of visibilities unfold. While most discourse analyses rely on the notion that everything which is said is dependent on what is sayable, we invite contributors to imagine how we might analyze visual practices in relation to the visible.

Policies and their publics: discourses, actors and power

10th International Conference in Interpretive Policy Analysis

Anti-austerity protests in Southern Europe, the Occupy Movement in North America and Europe, to say nothing about the Vinegar Movement against the costs of hosting the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, are recent examples of spectacular contestations against government programmes which are paradoxically justified as being in the public interest. In a somewhat different vein, the widespread promotion of participatory democracy, at all levels of government, has spurred heated scholarly discussions regarding the 'democracy of the publics' (Manin, 1995). As such, the tenth IPA conference is devoted to studying public policies through their publics. The latter can best be understood as beneficiaries, recipients, and targets of public policies but also as stakeholders or participants in policy-making. In other words, publics are products as well as policy actors insofar as they inform public judgment (Dewey, 1927).

    Methods for synthesizing knowledge

    Tools of Evidence-based policy

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation

Le marketing au service de la performance publique ?

    Marketing Strategies for Public Performance
