Enjeux méthodologiques et théoriques

S’inscrivant dans le cadre de la trente-sixième conférence de la Société internationale pour la sociologie des religions (12 juillet - 15 juillet 2021), ce panel entend explorer et discuter les questions méthodologiques et théoriques relatives à la recherche ethnographique sur les expériences sensorielles et corporelles dans la religion et la spiritualité contemporaine. Il invite les chercheur·euse·s à présenter des contributions incluant la sensorialité comme aspect central de leur recherche, ou comme outil méthodologique (complétant les méthodologies classiques) ; ou comme perspective théorique dans l’approche de paramètres sensoriels et d’(inter-)actions corporelles.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages

The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Visibility of religious difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean

The goal of this volume is to show ways in which religion marked a perceptible difference in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. Considering visibility in the wider sense of the word -also including acoustic perception and other aspects that would differentiate them- religion made people either from their own will or under external coercion- visible within medieval societies. The tension between visibility through othering or self-labelling, and invisibility through cultural assimilation was a constant in the complex medieval cities and rural areas. It also carried on beyond the medieval period, sometimes reproducing previous problems, sometimes in the shape of new challenges. How did these dynamics play out? Can common patterns be found? What caused them to come into play? Where do we observe compliance or reluctance towards the aforementioned normative orders? Do we see spatial manifestations of these tensions? These (and other) questions may be addressed in case studies from different geographic areas and time periods.

Blasphemy and violence. Interdependencies since 1760

Liberas (Ghent, Belgium), in conjunction with the School of History, Religion and Philosophy at Oxford Brookes University (Oxford, United Kingdom) and the Leibniz Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany), organises an international colloquium devoted to the interdependency between blasphemy and violence in modern history. Both young and established scholars will focus on specific incidents of blasphemy and sacrilege in Europe and the Arab world.The eve preceding the conference (4 March), internationally renowned expert Alain Cabantous will give a keynote lecture in French on blasphemy and sacrilege during the French Revolution.

The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. XVIII International ARYS Conference

This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Theologies of revolution

Medieval to Modern Europe

Modern researchers still struggle to balance emic and etic explanations of revolutionary action, yet at least since the XIV^th century, movements and thinkers began to arise which clearly defined their violent, revolutionary action in theological terms, or terms in which the “religious” and “political” are not clearly separate spheres of existence. Such movements built and innovated upon existing understandings of matters like the human condition and history, the perfectability of the world, and the human relationship with God, to not merely legitimize violent action (post facto), but to motivate, guide, and inform it along the way. Our workshop aims to discuss and elaborate upon these and other themes related to revolution from the medieval to the modern periods in Europe, west and east. We hope to address the implications of re-opening historical debate on revolutions which take seriously the input of political-religion.
