The Transnational History of French Industrialisation before 1914

The aim of this conference will be to analyse the characteristics of 19th-century French industrialisation and to understand how these distinguish France from other countries that went through the same process in the same era. Instead of using the English case as the only reference (as is customary), particular attention will be paid to a comparison between France and other continental European countries, especially Germany. One important dimension is the place of national industrialisation trajectories in an international and transnational context; in the case of France, colonial empire played an undeniable role.

We invite contributions for our Workshop “Rethinking the Technical and the Human in Global Connectivity”, happening at Humboldt University Berlin, 24-25 May 2019. The materiality of technologies and infrastructures is significant; however, we think their impact on and interaction with societies has to be analysed in a global dimension as well. We hope to establish this approach for the broader field of African History, reacting and bringing attention to a growing interest in these questions indicated in a number of recently developed research projects and publications.

The European Industrial Heritage of the First World War

The First World War marked the history of Europe. It has been characterized by an unprecedented effort in industrial production, which today constitutes a common European heritage. The industrial heritage of the First World War, however, seems to be invisible: it is not identified or even defined as such, whereas this war was characterized by the massive use of industrial technology, both in the field of the production of weapons, aircraft and chemicals for military purposes as well as in the civil sector, particularly for agri-food production. It is interesting to note that conversely, the industrial heritage of the Reconstruction could be the subject of work. The organization of a European symposium, the first on this theme, is essential in order to establish an inventory of the material traces that still exist today and to draw the attention of the public authorities to the need to ensure their conservation.

Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century

In the workshop on "Accidents and the role of the state" we want to discuss, from a historical perspective, the changing relationship between accidents and the modern state during the 20^th century. Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) joint research project on military accidents in France and Germany in the twentieth century. We are therefore especially interested in proposals that deal with the role of the military. However, relevant topics for the workshop could, of course, also come from the realm of the histories of technology, of environment, of medicine, or of the rise of the modern state. We are interested both in presentations of case studies as well as in more conceptual approaches on the topic. Contributions that deal with accidents in German and French history are highly welcome. However, the call is by no means limited to historians of France or Germany.

Regional producers or global players? The internationalization of companies in the 19th and 20th centuries

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. A West German Governance Compromise?

Stakeholder Relations from the ”Wirtschaftswunder“ to the Industrial Structural Crisis - 1950’s to the 1980’s

The current economic crisis leads one to question the main objectives companies should be striving for. The possibilities range within a field of controversy between an absolute shareholder orientation and a governance compromise with the different company’s stakeholders. This workshop aims to reassess how far stakeholder relations in different companies prove the existence of a specific West German governance compromise from the 1950’s through the 1980’s. Did companies only have the possibility to meet their stakeholders’ expectations because of their financial scope or did stakeholder orientation rather emanate from attempts to insure the company’s long-term profitability?

Histoire des conflits de proximité aux XIXe et XXe siècles

Dans le cadre du programme de recherches Cdhte-Pirve 997 : « Débordements des activités industrielles dans la cité. Études de conflits et d’interventions publiques aux XIXe et XXe siècles », une journée d’étude propose le 23 juin 2009 au Cnam d’exposer les façons d’établir les faits de conflits de proximité et d’analyser leurs modes d’expression dans l’espace public. À partir de l’exposé de quelques cas repérés et en cours d’étude, il sera question d’échanger les points de vue sur la pertinence des approches transversales et interdisciplinaires qu’impose ainsi l’étude de ces « conflits de proximité » générés par les débordements industriels.
