Seeing Politics through Intermediation and Intermediaries
This seminar proposes to look at politics through the lens of political intermediaries and what they do, i.e. intermediation. Intermediaries can be defined as an assorted group of actors (political brokers, political parties, interest groups, movements) who acts as a hinge between two or more levels, actors or social institutions; while intermediation , as a process, encompasses all the mediations that these actors perform in order to keep the political system intact (Zaremberg, Guarneros-Meza, and Lavalle 2017; Gunther, Puhle, and Montero 2007; Kitschelt 2004; Smith 2007). The question we are interested in relates to the transformations in the roles of these agents and processes of mediation since the neo-liberal transformation has engulfed the processes of public policy formulation, contestation and enactment.

South Asia from the Lens of Student Politics
South Asia Multidiciplinary Academic Journal (SAMAJ)
The papers in the seminar will address a broad range of research questions through acknowledging the regional and national variability of movements across Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. On what issues and identities students mobilise in South Asia? What is the visibility and influence of student politics on society and political process? To which extent student politics is tied to party politics and broader socio-political networks? What means and methods of mobilisation are employed by student activists? How student politics is affected by and reacts to neo-liberalism, consumerism and globalisation?

Rejuvenating politics? Student politics and the history of youth’s political selves in South Asia
UW Madison conference (October 2018)
By drawing attention to the historical formation of both master narratives and counter claims developed by educated youth in the postcolonial period, the panel explores the relevance of campus spaces in the fashioning of political selves. After partition, many scholars regretted that students’ ‘movement’ had given way to sporadic, dispersed ‘agitations’, focused primarily on campus issues. Instead of dismissing group-based demands as ‘parochial’, or looking at students’ dispersion as a problem, this panel proposes to explore the myriad ways in which student politics supported, challenged or re-interpreted mainstream understandings of South Asian societies.

Post-soviet dis-integration and dis-connections (1991-2016)
25 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, this conference aims at investigating its transversal consequences from two original standpoints: patterns of integration/disintegration combined to logics of connection / disconnection. These issues have various expressions in societal, normative, linguistic, regional or international fields. The conference will hence tackle a general question: how do political choices, economic contingencies or social phenomena foster or disrupt all kinds of links throughout the post-soviet area?

The departments of contemporary studies of IFEA (Istanbul) and IFPO organize a workshop in Erbil, the 29th of May 2014. This workshop aims at analysing the evolving dynamics of the Kurdish populated areas in Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran. More precisely, it will focus on the changing interactions between the nation-states and the Kurdish political actors, and on the impacts of these transformations on the modes of local governance.

Un an et demi après leur déclenchement, les révolutions arabes présentent un bilan hasardeux : en Tunisie, en Égypte et en Libye, où les anciens dirigeants ont été chassés du pouvoir par le soulèvement populaire, le paysage politique reste incertain. Au Yémen une transition inaccomplie s'est mise en place, au Bahrein le soulèvement a été étouffé, et la Syrie s'enfonce dans une guerre civile où l'opposition démocratique est prise entre la sanglante répression du pouvoir et la montée en puissance des éléments jihadistes. -

L'objectif de ce colloque est d'enrichir l'historiographie des relations entre l'Europe de l'Est et les pays riverains de la Méditerranée. La périodisation proposée s’étend de 1967 à 1989 et prend en compte les seules relations politiques, diplomatiques et économiques entre l’Est de l’Europe et la Méditerranée, que ce soit de manière bilatérale ou multilatérale. -

Les présentations explorent le droit colonial vis-à-vis du waqf en tant qu'institution mais aussi les propriétés leur appartenant dans le monde musulman avant l'indépendence des pays colonisés. Dans l'objectif d'étudier le droit qui s'y adaptait ou qui s'adaptait par rapport au waqf, les contributions se concentrent sur des mécanismes légaux innovateurs ou des discussions qui ont eu lieu dans les pays concernés à l'égard du statu quo de waqf au moment des interventions coloniales à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle.
