The French Revolution and the Sacred
Global and Contemporary Perspectives (18th c. – present)
In the years leading up to the bicentenary commemorations of 1989, a new liberal interpretation of the French Revolution challenged a long-lived socialist one. In contrast to the Marxist view of a “bourgeois revolution” with popular support, the liberal historiography has recurrently emphasized the role of “revolutionary ideology” and the “collective mentality” which led to the episode of the “Terror”. We might take the end of Cold War binary frameworks as an opportunity to move beyond this long-lasting interpretive divide, and to reinvestigate how the Revolution transformed ideas of the sacred and has itself been sacralized.

French and Francophone Philosophers and the Development of LGBTQIA+ Movements in the 20th Century
This international one-day conference, held during LGBTQ+ History Month, will explore the relationship between French and Francophone philosophy and the development of LGBTQIA+ movements across the twentieth century. The intellectual contributions of figures such as Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Monique Wittig, and Hélène Cixous profoundly shaped how we think about gender, sexuality, embodiment, and power. The aim of this event is to bring together academic research, creative expression, and political engagement.

Summerschool: Marriage in Premodern Imagination
Art, Gender & Cultural History of an Institution and a Sacrament
The interdisciplinary summer school Marriage in Premodern Europe (1400–1800), jointly organized by Viadrina and Sorbonne University (Paris 1), investigates marriage as a theological, legal, and socio-political institution. Combining perspectives from literary studies, theology, religious and art history, and gender studies, the program examines how confessionalisation and legal regulation shaped norms, rituals, and power relations across Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed traditions. Particular attention is given to the interaction between doctrine, institutional authority, and lived experience in the formation of premodern matrimonial cultures.

Des expositions récentes (Here We Are!

Knowledge and Know-How Serving the Reactivation of Celtic and Medieval Music
Archaeo-Musicology and Archaeo-Luthiery
On the occasion of the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists, to be held from August 28 to 31 in Rome (Italy), a call for papers has been launched for a colloquium on the archaeo-violin making, or how to understand instruments from an archaeological point of view, from the Celts to the Middle Ages. If it is accepted that violin making is defined as the craftsmanship of stringed and necked instruments still used today, we can call “archaeo-violin making” the craftsmanship of musical instruments of the past, the physical traces of which are too fragmentary to be able to work by reproduction, as is the case for instruments kept in collections.

Digital Humanities meet Artificial Intelligence Seminar Series
DHAI Seminar Summary : Fostered by the creation of new algorithms, computation power and the development of deep learning techniques, Artificial Intelligence needs constantly to confront new issues and data sets in order to deepen its methodologies and increase its range of scientific applications. Digital humanities, developing digital science methodologies in the study of humanities and using the critical approaches of humanities in the analysis of the contemporary “digital revolutions,” are constantly in search of new tools to explore more and more complex and diversified data sets. The ambition of this seminar is to be one of the places where this coupling is shaped, fostered and analyzed. It intends to offer a forum where both communities, understood in a very inclusive way, exchange around emerging issues, ongoing projects, and past experiences in order to build a common language, a shared space, and to encourage innovative cooperation on the long run.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works
“Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence” - Special Issue
Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.
