Summer School - Representation
Over the past decades, there has been a growing interest among scholars in analysing how the Islamic heritage in Europe has been perceived, described, preserved, erased, negotiated or transformed in different areas of Europe, from medieval to modern times. However, those debates seldom crossed the borders of regional approaches. The aim of this training school is to discuss those issues from different and complementary perspectives, including art history, but also philosophy, history of science or anthropology, and to question the traditional regional narrative through a comparative examination of Islamic monuments in a wider Mediterranean perspective.

The creative process in portuguese film: materialities
The term “materialities”, when applied to cinema, convokes the different areas that interact in the materialisation of a film project: choice of recording support, art direction, costumes, sound, light (amongst many others). The aim of this conference is to promote debate around the communicative and expressive powers inscribed in the many elements that comprise an oeuvre, apprehending filmmaking as a complex process apportioned between different teams; a process which culminates in a final work that is inevitably “inter-artistic”, since a wide range of arts and crafts have collaborated in the construction of the cinematic object.

Arts and Models of Democracy in post-authoritarian Iberian Peninsula
This two-day conference aims to innovatively question how artistic practices and institutions formed ways of imagining democracy and by what means arts and culture participate in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-Estado Novo and post-Francoist period: how did artistic practices instantiate ideas of democracy in this context? Inversely, how did such democratic values inform artistic practice? How did Portuguese and Spanish artists and intellectuals negotiate between creative autonomy and social responsibility? And more broadly, what is the role of culture in a democracy? The core purpose of the conference is to bring scholars together from different subject areas and exploring any artistic practice (literature, visual and plastic arts, cinema and music).

Medieval Manuscripts in Motion 2015
This International Conference aims to follow up the initiative "Medieval Europe in Motion: the circulation of artists, images, patterns and ideas, from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic coast", held in Lisbon in 2013 and organized by the Institute for Medieval Studies of the Nova University Lisbon. With the aim of creating academic, scientific and organizational synergies, this second edition will be organized in collaboration with two other international institutions, the University of Cantabria and the University of León. The main scientific of the event, as it was the previous conference, is to analyse the phenomenon of circulation, motion and mobility of people, forms and ideas during the Middle Ages. This time, however, the kind of works under consideration will be illuminated manuscripts. This three-day Conference aims thus to conduct a critical and constructive revision of research on Iberian Book Illumination in the Middle Ages, proposing new questions to be discussed.

Academy as Community: English and American Studies in Portugal and Europe
34th APEAA Meeting
The tradition of English and American studies in Portugal has long been supported by the dynamics of academic associativism, in which APEAA’s peer network stands out, involving national and international institutions, and establishing continued interactions with research centres. At a time when political and cultural paradigms are on the verge of crisis and/or change, it is of the utmost importance to revisit the theoretical and pragmatic frameworks that sustain (and constrain) our research practices. Thus, this conference aims to provide a forum to discuss how Anglo-American scholarship, with its vocation for plurality and innovative interdisciplinary proposals, may progress. We also want to build strategies of cohesion among our peers in order to better disseminate our contribution to the interpretation and the fruition of meaning(s), valuing a plurality of cultural and aesthetic manifestations.

Call for papers - Representation
Representing the people
