New approaches to the history of soft power in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
The study of soft power in the modern period is unequal, with much attention understandably paid to the Cold War when culture offered a surrogate for damaged and blocked political dialogues. But practices that aimed at promoting a nation abroad were not invented after the Second World War, nor were they inexistent before then. Some historians have traced their origins back to the nineteenth century with the formation of nation states (in Europe) and the growth of ministries of foreign affairs. In addition, the historiography has largely omitted soft power policies produced by and targeting so called “periphery countries”. Therefore, much remains to be written if we are to fully appreciate the history of soft power and its associated key concepts (public and cultural diplomacy, propaganda, publicity, promotion, oeuvres -in the French context, public relations) and the multiplicity of meanings with which these ideas and practices were endowed globally throughout the modern period.

“Rebirth” may also imply looking back at past historical moments with a new perspective, which for instance led Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies to be associated with Neo-Victorianism, and more precisely the “Neo-Victorian at sea” and a “global memory of the Victorian” (Elizabeth Ho). This panel will also discuss “renaissance” movements: can we consider that an indigenous literary renaissance has taken place in Canada, Australia or New Zealand? Has an increasing awareness of the need to protect the environment led to new literary practices and movements? The Renaissance involved the development of vernacular languages in literature; what has been the place of vernacular languages and oral literary practices in postcolonial literatures? Theory also evolves constantly: has postcolonial theory been renewed since the 1980s? In what ways?

New Caledonia and the intellectual imagination
This symposium co-convened by Scott Robertson (ANU) and Ingrid Sykes (La Trobe University) will draw together leading researchers from a variety of different backgrounds to discuss the way in which contemporary and historical New Caledonia reconfigures our understandings of key-defining areas of Western humanities and social scientific thought. This interdisciplinary conference will examine cinematic and televisual cultural productions that fall under a broad "French-language" umbrella in order to map out significant trends as well as new directions in the study of global French-language cinema and television and its points of contact with other languages and industries. It also aims to explore the opportunities and limitations of adopting labels such as cinéma-monde, transnational, Francophone, and World Cinema, as critical frameworks.

Collapse and Resilience of German Missions 1914-1939
World War I had a devastating impact upon German Missions (Roman Catholic and Protestant). A general description of German mission fields A.D. 1914 will be the starting point of the Conference. Case studies are welcome on particular territories such as Togo, Cameroon, East Africa, South-West Africa, South East Asia, Pacific area, China, India, Middle East. Attention will be paid to the predicament of local "orphaned" Christian churches and communities, and to the relationships between the local leadership with the new foreign missions authorized by the Allies instead of German personnel.

Angles, French Perspectives on the Anglophone World
For its inaugural issue, Angles: French Perspectives on the Anglophone World welcomes original proposals inspired by the celebrated aphorism: ‘Brevity is the soul of wit’. Often used to describe a literary and social form (humor or sarcasm) or to illustrate commonplaces, the dictum encapsulates beliefs about the relationship between ‘brevity’ and ‘wit’ which have numerous implications in different disciplines and forms of expression. The aphorism not only suggests that brevity is a gateway to revelatory truths, it also implies that true ‘wit’ exists only in shortened form, paradoxically positing depth of meaning (‘soul’) in brevity of form, and also hinting that humor loses its essence when explicated. Additional contradictions emerge when one recalls the context in which the line appears in Hamlet, when Polonius tires the audience by giving some words of wisdom to his departing son.

Le Musée Muséum départemental des Hautes-Alpes organise trois journées d’étude, de rencontre et d’échange, sur le thème des arcs et flèches des collections ethnographiques extra-européennes. Les sujets de discussion porteront sur l’identification, la valorisation et la conservation de ce type de collection. A cette occasion le musée sortira de ses réserves sa collection ethnographique constituée de pièces provenant d’Océanie, Afrique, Asie et Amérique. Ce séminaire s’adresse aux chercheurs, anthropologues, médiateurs, professionnels de la conservation et de l’univers muséal. -

Anthropologie du christianisme océanien
La présence et l'influence des églises chrétiennes en Océanie sont aujourd'hui devenues des données incontournables de l'analyse de ces sociétés insulaires et des dynamiques régionales. Alors que les églises dites « historiques » ou « traditionnelles » avaient élaboré un discours chrétien sur les identités culturelles locales face à l'occidentalisation, l'essor des églises mormones et adventistes, puis de la « troisième vague » du christianisme océanien - les mouvements évangéliques et pentecôtistes - semblent aujourd'hui remettre en cause ces équilibres. Ces journées d'études visent à la fois à dresser un état des lieux du christianisme océanien contemporain et à réfléchir aux approches anthropologiques disponibles pour rendre compte des rapports entre christianisme et culture dans cette région du monde.
