Islands and remoteness in Geography, Law, and Fiction

The conference seeks to explore how, in many ways, islands appear to be “geographical paradoxes”. Indeed, they are spatially remote places, which are, at the same time, bound to a continent by social conventions. The grounds of such puzzle are manifold. It is firstly a matter of spatial area. Secondly, the puzzle depends on how the political power projects authority over circumscribed spatial realms, including non-continental realms.

Four visiting fellowships in The Integrated Research Training Group of the Collaborative Research Centre/SFB 1150

The Integrated Research Training Group of the Collaborative Research Centre/ SFB 1150 “Cultures of Decision-making”, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) at the University of Muenster since July 1st 2015, is offering four visiting fellowships for postgraduates / doctoral candidates in 2018 for a period of up to six months, starting in April 2018. The fellowship is EUR 1.365 per month (tax-free; if applicable plus children’s allowance; statutory accident insurance cover according to § 2 Abs. 1 Satz 1 SGB VII; health and social insurance not included) with an additional grant for traveling expenses. For the time of the fellowship the visiting fellows are members of the Integrated Research Training Group of the SFB 1150 and are expected to participate in the programme of the Integrated Research Training Group as well as in the common activities of the SFB 1150.

La conférence cherche à réunir des jeunes chercheurs et doctorants qui travaillent sur les questions aux confins du droit et des autres disciplines. Le projet a été initialement conçu comme une réponse au silence de la discipline juridique s’agissant des causes, des effets, et des solutions à apporter à la récente crise économique. Plus généralement, nous souhaitons mettre en place un cadre permettant de débattre sur la manière dont les juristes européens peuvent s’approprier les problématiques posées par la gouvernance globale. Cette année la conférence se tiendra à sciences politiques Paris les 19 et 20 mai 2014.

The theme for this year’s Critical Legal Conference is “Gardens of Justice”. Although the theme may be interpreted in different ways, it suggests thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment, created for specific purposes, at a certain distance from society and yet as an integral part of it. The theme also invites you to think about justice as a concrete metaphor rather than an abstract concept. Just like any ordinary garden, legal institutions affect both people working in them and people who are just passing through their arrangements.

Eighth Roundtables for the Semiotics of Law - IRSL 2009

La rencontre de 2009 entend se concentrer sur les progrès réalisés dans les divers domaines – méthodologiques, épistémologiques et conceptuels – de recherche en sémiotique juridique. La table ronde souhaite, notamment, explorer les conséquences des thèmes suivants : « Transparence, contrôle et pouvoir » sous une perspective sémiotique ainsi que les approches émergeantes et prometteuses qui peuvent être utilisées dans la recherche et l'interprétation du droit et des phénomènes juridiques. Le but principal de cette rencontre est d'examiner les défis épistémologiques et méthodologiques auxquels « transparence, contrôle et pouvoir » fait face aujourd'hui et d'en considérer les effets. Nous espérons que les communications refléteront la nature interdisciplinaire des recherches en sémiotique juridique ainsi que les défis auxquels les chercheurs font face dans ce domaine.
