French Historical Studies (Special Issue)
The history of the music of France has traditionally been studied as a separate category without the same robust interest as other cultural artifacts such as film and literature. More recent scholarship illuminates the place of music in French society and suggests that more work should be done to sketch out the particular place of music in all its forms in French history. This special issue of French Historical Studies proposes to take stock of and advance this historiographical renewal. What can the production and consumption of music tell us about the shifting nature of French identity and the relationships among various constituencies in French history?

The ultimate purpose of the International Congress on Desert Economy – Dakhla, is to be a scientific and multidisciplinary platform on desert and Sahara economy development, in order to contribute effectively to the good governance and in the sustainable development of desert regions, by stimulating meetings between all stakeholders on a global scale, with a view to fostering cooperation and partnership, among (Sahara) desert countries (Africa, the Gulf States, the United States of America, China, Australia...), with the aim of creating a conducive environment to the exchange of experiences, expertise and innovation, around themes related to desert and Sahara economy development, such as: Tourism and travel industry, agriculture, renewable energy, raw materials, transportation and logistics, sea and ocean economy, technology and innovation, entertainment and sport economy, cultural and intangible heritage, nature and environment.

Special issue of the Journal of Festive Studies
In previous issues, the Journal of Festive Studies explored the emerging academic sub-field of festive studies (broadly defined) and the politics of carnival. For this issue, we follow Peter-Paul Verbeek’s advice and look at “the things themselves,” i.e. at the material culture in which carnivals and other festivities are rooted (Verbeek, 2005).

English journeys past and present, explorations of the condition of England
The conference will address the following hypothesis: the illustration of a certain way of being English, of a specific English way of inhabiting and making sense of the world, were given definition and cultural force through a series of writings which record the impressions of things seen in the course of a journey dedicated to the exploration of a territory, whether the land of England in its national extension or the more local territory of a particular community. The organizers are calling for papers which will examine a corpus of writing proposing a first-person observations of a condition of England at various moments in the history of a territory.

A vector of sustainable development?
The objective of the conference is to analyze the effect of tourism, questioning more specifically in this second edition its potential for becoming a vector of sustainable development, understood in its more general sense. Within this framework, we will question its economic impact, as well as its social effects, on Indonesia and Southern countries. We are interested in knowing how extra income is redistributed to the local population and whether it affects, or on the contrary, strengthens the traditional organizations of the communities, bringing new actors, investors, decision-makers in the traditional social organization.

The time has come to give due recognition to there scaling processes affecting heritage and tourism destinations, intended both as upscaling and downscaling. Rescaling heritage andtourism destinations can be seen as both a strategy pursued by national and regional agencies, or as unintended consequences of the constant interplay between an increasingly complex array of stakeholders, including cross-national institutions and local communities.

The conference is intended as well to cast light on the evolving changes in travel and sojourn in Naples and localities along the gulf during the first half of the nineteenth century, not failing to draw comparisons with other areas of Mediterranean Europe.

To what extend can football be a part of european identity?
Appel à contribution pour le colloque « Y a-t-il un football européen ? » qui se déroulera le vendredi 7 mai 2010 à l'Université Paris Descartes. Quinze ans après l'arrêt Bosman, l'idée d'un « football national » en Europe semble plus que jamais dépassée. Parallèlement à l'ouverture des frontières, la suppression des quotas de joueurs en provenance de l'Union européenne a modifié considérablement le paysage du football. Des voix se sont même élevées contre cette réglementation accusée d'avoir « tué » les petits championnats et permis aux grands clubs, mieux dotés, d'asseoir leur hégémonie. Par ailleurs, on ne compte plus les exemples de clubs alignant des équipes constituées pour moitié, voire en totalité de joueurs d'origine étrangère, ni les clubs voire les sélections nationales entraînées par des coachs étrangers (Capello en Angleterre...). -

Dans ce numéro thématique de la revue Ethnologies, nous proposons de réfléchir au jeu identitaire et à l’identité jouée dans les jeux et dans les sports. Nous cherchons ainsi à mieux comprendre comment le joueur peut s’exprimer et s’affirmer dans une pratique ludique et/ou sportive et quelle est la cohérence de cette pratique pour le social. In this special issue of Ethnologies, we invite thoughts on identity games and on performed identity in games and sports. We seek a better understanding of how a player can express and assert himself/herself in leisure or sporting practices, and of the social coherence of these practices. -

Aeronautical Culture. Artifacts, Imagination, and the Practice of Aeronautics.18th-20th Century
L’approche de l’histoire de l’aéronautique proposée ici est celle de problématiques transversales sur la longue durée. Des premiers ballons en 1783 aux transports de masse de nos jours, la culture aérienne a imprimé sa marque au monde moderne. Loin d’opposer aérostation et aviation, il s’agit de s’interroger sur cette culture aérienne en prenant en considération les temps longs et parfois superposés des savoirs, des représentations, des réceptions et des pratiques variées qui traversent le champ des techniques. Le vol libre des ballons nourrit tout au long du XIXe siècle de nouveaux imaginaires et trace l’horizon de conquêtes possibles que l’avion et le dirigeable revivifient et rendent réalisables. La première guerre mondiale génère des industries aéronautiques, y compris civiles ; le transport de masse, des entreprises et des infrastructures, des flux de voyageurs et de marchandises, le nouveau visage des échanges mondiaux. Loin de se réduire à l’héroïsme des pionniers, ces problématiques permettent d’aborder un ensemble de questions nouant l’histoire des techniques et l’histoire culturelle.
