The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Imperial Mysticisms: Piety and Power in Early Modern Empires from a Global Perspective

Comparative research on the world-wide manifestations of mysticism in the imperial practice and performance of power seems promising for several reasons. It will enable us to highlight the appeal mystical spirituality had within the different religious traditions of the period; to point out historical contacts and transmission lines of a direct or indirect character and to discuss whether these religious and political developments fit into a common historical narrative. Regardless of what the answer to this question will be, we are certain that the elaboration of global perspectives, terminologies and research agendas is a goal worthy of being pursued in its own right. The conference will thus be part of approaches in historiography that aim at overcoming old epistemological boundaries between the study of the Orient and that of the West.

Historiography of the Perception of Islam through Manuscripts, Korans and their Displacement

The aim of this workshop is to approach the question of the relationship between Christianity and Islam through the study of the production, circulation and uses of Arabic manuscripts, and mainly Korans, in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean Europe. Our assumption is that the Balkans, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula form an axis of circulation which is especially significant for our understanding of the Mediterranean Sea as a comprehensive space of cultural, political and religious contact.

The Research Network on Christian Churches, Culture and Society (www.ccsce.eu) fosters historical research on the interaction of religion, culture, and society in Europe from the second half of the eighteenth-century until the present. CCSCE aspires to a renewed approach to religious history, implementing a broad and transnational European perspective. It aims to develop a durable and multidisciplinary research community on the subject, involving both senior and promising young scholars. The aim of this meeting is to bring together confirmed and emerging specialists in order to gain some perspective on the current academic research on Ibn ʿArabī and “Akbarī” thought and to discuss research directions for the future. It will also bring to light questions arising from the reading and use of Ibn ʿArabī’s ideas today, taking into account the new approaches and better access to the texts provided by recent tools for textual analysis, and evaluating how our present-day situation shapes our understanding of his works, and conversely, what an informed reading can bring to current re-appropriations and (mis)use.

Communautés cléricales et communautés monastiques dans le monde carolingien (VIIIe-Xe siècle)

Ce colloque entend appréhender les évolutions des communautés cléricales et monastiques d’époque carolingienne afin d’interroger les effets concrets de la réforme de 816-819 et la notion même d’institutionnalisation de l’Église, dont on fait souvent un des traits caractéristiques de la période. Il s’agira d’observer de quelle manière étaient organisées ces institutions, entre le VIII^e et la fin du X^e siècle, sans préjuger d’une rupture en un temps donné, afin de mieux mesurer ce qui caractérisait les différents types de communautés (monastiques et canoniques / canoniales) et à quel point l'effort réformateur mené à l’initiative de la cour constitue ou non une inflexion majeure dans l’histoire de l’organisation de l’Église et des communautés ecclésiastiques.

Five Centuries of Cultural Influence

Generations of scholars have studied the multi-faceted experiences of the Franciscans in Mexico and the ways in which the Franciscan order shaped New Spain and the early Mexican republic. This conference examines the range of Franciscan influence and analyzes new scholarship that focuses on the multiple discourses with which friars engaged native peoples, creole populations, the vice-regal authorities, and other actors throughout the Spanish empire. The conference brings together junior and senior scholars to study the long Franciscan experience in Mexico on the eve of the commemoration of the quincentenary of the Spanish — and thus the Franciscan— presence in Mexico.

Christianity emerged as an urban phenomenon, yet monasticism is more often than not presented as an escape from the sinful town into the wilderness, and as more concerned with the soul than with the body. Ascetics, however, have always had a vested interest in the city, and not only symbolically. Monasticism has been an important urban presence since Late Antiquity up to the Late Middle Ages, even if they were sometimes in competition with newer religious orders.

The saints of Rome have always been among the most venerated and the most popular heavenly patrons in Christendom, grafting the noble air of universality and integration onto emerging Christian cultures. From the apostles and Early Christian martyrs through the Early Modern period and beyond, the textual and material dissemination of Roman saints made a significant impact on the rise of the cult of the saints. Post-Tridentine Roman cults spread by the Society of Jesus and the revival of catacomb cults brought a new wave in the world-wide cult of the saints of Rome in the early modern period.

Les missions allemandes : leur liquidation et leur résilience 1914-1939

Ce 36^e colloque du CREDIC s'inscrit dans le cycle des commémorations de la « Grande Guerre ». Quel a été son impact sur les missions chrétiennes allemandes, catholiques et protestantes, et sur les Églises et les œuvres locales suscitées par leur action ? Dès le déclenchement des hostilités les personnels missionnaires de nationalité allemande ont dû cesser leurs activités et quitter leurs postes. Leurs possessions et leurs instruments de travail ont été séquestrés ou réquisitionnés. La liquidation des missions allemandes n'a pas empêché l'héritage allemand de se faire sentir et parfois même d'être reconnu par les nouveaux maîtres des territoires. De plus, les sciences missionnaires allemandes déjà très avancées avant la guerre ont continué à se développer ; elles ont été entendues dans le débat international sur la mission à travers les grandes conférences missionnaires mondiales (Jérusalem 1928, Tambaram 1938) et dans le développement de la pensée missionnaire catholique. On peut parler de résilience des missions allemandes au-delà et à travers leurs tribulations.
