ddh20 : Data and Digital Humanities 2020

The digital humanities offer a particularly rich research field of studies for data processing, apart from those of the hard sciences and the social sciences. Indeed, the humanities are rarely subject to privacy principles (privacy by design, GDPR…) that affect most social science works and are not just about digital or binary data. Moreover, in DH the data pre-exist and are most often already known if they are not collected and formalized. In this specific context, we propose in this track to question the practices resulting from the constitution of corpus and uses of data in humanities.

Maxim Kantor – The Future of Humanity

The goal of this international conference is to explore Kantor’s artistic work, his painting and writing, as a contribution he makes for the future of humanity. Kantor has been known as a Russian dissident and a fierce critic of the political development in the former Soviet Union, and his view of the current social, political, and spiritual situation of Europe is no less sharp. The scientific committee considers a strong analysis or a close reading of Kantor’s works as a major criterium in selecting the papers. As many writings are available only in Russian, the scientific committee strongly encourages scholars who are fluent in Russian to submit proposals that could make these texts available to a larger public.

Violence and film

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the depiction of violence in film and television. Violence, real or threatened, drives the plots of many, if not most, of the narratives we watch on the screen. Detectives solve grisly murders, victims seek revenge, teenagers flee slashers, gangsters spray bullets, Kungfu fighters trade punches, and armies clash on the battlefield (or in outer space). While almost everyone claims to wants to reduce the levels of violence in society, movie audiences regularly get an enormous kick out of watching on the screen what we abhor in real life. But not all cinematic violence is meant to titillate. Often the aim is to bring audiences closer to the sickening reality of the mistreatment and abuse suffered by those whose plights might otherwise remain invisible to us. While many worry that exposure to cinematic violence may desensitize us, perhaps it can also serve to awaken our empathy.

The bridges recently built between these fields are already proving to be productive, as they have led to the development of new tools, approaches, and methodologies, such as deep mapping techniques and the spatial humanities. How have the disciplines evolved in recent years? Do we need to redefine the key concepts regarding space and place? Has our relationship with territory changed? Premier colloque international de Saint-Omer

Le colloque international de Saint-Omer est organisé conjointement par le Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - université d’Artois), et la Communauté d’Agglomération du Pays de Saint-Omer (CAPSO) représentée par sa Bibliothèque et son Université Populaire. Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le cadre du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire : La Renaissance dans les Provinces du Nord, coordonné depuis 2015 par Charles GiryDeloison et Laurence Baudoux, et dans la continuité des journées d’études annuelles organisées au sein de ce programme à l’université d’Artois. In recent years, Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht has dedicated his attention to a description of the broad present – the temporality that characterizes our time, which he conceives as a space marked by a twofold reduction of the “space of experience” and the “horizon of expectations.” This temporal experience specific to contemporaneity has intensified a suspension, as it were, of entities around us, which entails a tendency to, on the one hand, repetition of more sedimented experiences and, on the other, virtualization and consumerism. Along with suspension, however, one also observes a certain tendency of placing sensibility, indeed, the body, in a fundamental place.

What remains of postmodernity?

Since the 70s, the word postmodernity has articulated a tendency, a state of mind, and a condition that resists conceptualization or complete definition. Although the intellectual community has agreed to situate J. F. Lyotard and his key work, The Postmodern condition (1979), as the origin of the debate on this phenomenon, the truth is that the literary theorist Ihab Hassan had already used the word systematically in 1971. Since that date, the notion has spread across the fields of Literature, Architecture, Visual Arts, and the Social Sciences. These are two of the problems that one faces when approaching the surface of the postmodern phenomenon: its lack of definition and its ambiguous periodization.

Scaling. What happens when we scale things up or down?

Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018

The 2018 session will be devoted to the investigation of scale and scaling as operative concepts for the analysis of media. What happens when we scale? Does anything really change? Can scaling ever impact the inner blueprint of an object? Are there laws of scaling? Or does scaling resist any attempt at calculability, such that, to investigate it, we can only ever look at individual events of scaling? As a media practice, scaling is widely used. But, in contrast to the ubiquity of operations, scaling is hardly ever viewed on its own terms as a basic concept of media analysis. The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies 2018 will attempt to map out approaches to scaling as a basic media-analytical tool.
