A New Historiographical Field and its Contribution to the History of Europe

German-Polish history is an innovative and stimulating field in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. We propose to reflect the historiographical and memorial challenges that governed the formation of this field as well as the concepts and methods on which it has since been built. They are now the basis for the dynamics of the field, due in particular to its ability to associate different scales of analysis from the local to the global level. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of Polish-German history and other »bi-national« historiographies like Franco-German history to the project of writing European history especially when it comes to the specific approaches forged or adopted by historians in these fields (transfer, shared history, histoire croisée, connected history, entangled history, Zwischenraum).

La guerre comme espace de contact au XIXe siècle

Cette journée d'étude se propose de réunir des chercheurs autour de la thématique des guerres comme lieux de rencontre et d'échanges pendant un « long dix-neuvième siècle » (1789-1914). Située dans le champ de l'histoire culturelle de la guerre, elle vise à interroger les catégories d'analyse traditionnellement utilisées par les historiens - notamment celle de la totalisation - pour en questionner la pertinence dès lors que l'attention se concentre sur les conflits militaires du XIX^e siècle, principalement en Europe.

New approches to Ruskin on Art and Architecture

En prévision du bicentenaire de la naissance de John Ruskin en 2019, ce colloque permettra de rassembler, de présenter et d'échanger de nouvelles approches de la part de jeunes chercheurs à propos du travail de John Ruskin, à la fois critique d'art, théoricien, historien d'art, artiste et commentateur du XIX^e siècle avec une attention particulière sur son travail concernant l'art et l'architecture compris pour constituer le noyau central des engagements de Ruskin en terme de société et d'expérience.

Male bonds in nineteenth-century art

Male Bonds is a two-day international conference that aims to explore the place of male bonds in nineteenth-century artistic practice and visual arts. The conference invites participants to reflect on the ways in which changing notions of masculinity and male sexuality impacted forms of sociability between men in the artistic scene of the long nineteenth century. In so doing, it seeks to build a bridge between traditional art-historical scholarship and the fields of gender and gay and lesbian studies.

First international seminar for post-graduate students in Sport History

A first international seminar for PHD and post-graduate students in sport history (political and cultural perspectives) supervised by Prof. Dave Day (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Prof. J.-F. Loudcher (Bordeaux) is planned at Bordeaux between the 11^th September and the 13^th September 2017. It is the first of a series of seminars between the two universities (the next will be in Manchester) and will provides an opportunity to establish new relationsships and partnerships with students ands researchers from all over the world. In addition, this one will have a workshop on European project research funding on cultural and political sport coaching in a comparative way for an application in 2018. It is possible to just attend the seminar and the workshop.

Art History for Artists: Interactions Between Scholarly Discourse and Artistic Practice in the 19th Century

The development of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century has been variously associated with the politics of national identity, the needs of a growing bourgeois public in search of cultural capital, or of an expanding art market. However, the role of art training, and art practitioners themselves in the shaping of the discipline remains unexamined. Courses in art history had been systematically introduced in the curricula of art and architecture academies since the late 18^th century, and spaces of art education count among the first institutional homes of the discipline, well before the establishment of autonomous university chairs. This conference aims to explore the interactions and productive tensions between art practice and art scholarship in the 19^th century.

The conference seeks to examine the shaping of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century in relation to artistic training and exchanges between artists and scholars. The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.

The Many Faces of Slavery: non-traditional slave experiences in the Atlantic World

By the 18^th century, racial slavery had matured into a fully-fledged, firmly established, profitable form of labour in the Atlantic World. In slave societies, the development of the plantation unit led both to the geographical concentration of the slave population and to a growing homogenization of the activities bondsmen performed. However, throughout the Atlantic World, the existence of phenomena such as urban slavery, slave self-hiring, quasi-free or nominal slaves, domestic slave concubines, slave vendors, slave sailors, slave preachers, slave overseers, and many other types of “societies with slaves,” broadens our traditional conception of slavery by complicating the slave experience. This conference does not aim to challenge the significance of the plantation system, but, by using it as a paradigm, seeks to assess the extent and nature of non-traditional forms of slavery in the context of the historical evolution of labour in the Atlantic World.
