  Tools and Methods for the History of Churches between East and West (5th-19th century)

  This doctoral workshop will make it possible to relate compartmentalized historiographies even though they share a central and strong object, the Church, which is often treated only as a backdrop to history. The participants who will take part in this school will have the opportunity to see combined diverse and complementary approaches: social, normative, liturgical, political, orientalist. The participants will have access to the methods, the problematization and the last achievements of these different interdisciplinary approaches in the long term.

  Meanings of rituals

  Incense and religion in ancient societies

  Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

  From Arab springs to the questionning of States

  Civil societies faced with the resurgeance of segmentary logics

  Ce colloque vise à analyser les processus de remise en cause de l’autorité et/ou de la légitimité de l’État dans cinq pays arabes touchés par ce phénomène : Irak, Syrie, Liban, Libye, Yémen. Il s’agira de comparer les différents processus en cours en les rattachant à un temps plus long et d'identifier dans les racines historiques des processus de construction nationale arabes les causes possibles du délitement des institutions étatiques auquel nous assistons dans les pays considérés, face à la tenue, réelle ou apparente, d’autres pays de la région, où l’Etat s’appuie sur des identités plus anciennes, y compris coloniales, et/ou sur des appareils sécuritaires omniprésents. La démarche s’appuie sur une dimension internationale et interdisciplinaire et s'adresse à l'ensemble des sciences sociales (anthropologie, histoire, sciences politiques et sociologie notamment).

  Choice pieces. The destruction and manipulation of goods in the Later Bronze Age: from reuse to sacrifice

  Durant la fin de l’âge du bronze et au début de l’âge du fer (c.1300-700 av JC), des objets en bronze ont été enfouis en grand nombre, parfois après avoir été intentionnellement brûlés, tordus, déchirés ou encore réduits à l’état de fragment. Découverts dans des tombes, ceux-ci sont reliés aux rituels funéraires, le plus souvent par le biais d’une assimilation au défunt. En revanche, ces objets détruits, manipulés – qu’ils soient biens de prestige ou d’usage plus commun – posent encore de nombreuses questions quand on les retrouve à l’intérieur des habitats, dans les sanctuaires ou dans les dépôts.
