A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History

PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Feeding animals/Eating animals. Theories, Attitudes and Cultural Representations of Nutrition in Ancient and Medieval World

According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.

Les écrits d’Esther (Etty) Hillesum sont pour nous un recueil precieux, constituant une documentation historique très saillante. Ils représentent un reportage au sujet du mal extrême, tel que la persécution raciale et les lagers, ainsi qu’une puissante réflexion philosophique autour de la valeur et du sens de la vie, de l'amour et de la mort. Le Colloque international « Etty hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014) » (9 et 10 décembre 2014, Université Ca' Foscari de Venise, Italie) veut tracer un bilan de l'œuvre de cet important témoin du XX^e siècle.

Democratic Highbrow. Bloomsbury tra élite e cultura di massa

Bloomsbury group represented a new way of living and working which marked a definitive break with the Victorian tradition and paved the way to modernity in the English culture. Between the wars the group was perceived by the British public alternatively as a stronghold of culture and civilization against barbarism and as the despicable epitome of modernist intellectual elitism. Nowadays Bloomsbury is a major presence in the cultural industry but, at the same time, it continues to raise questions and stimulate critical reflections: was it a coterie or a democratic avant-garde, an intellectual authority or an eccentric circle that “lived in squares and loved in triangles?” These are the issues that the conference seeks to address in a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing sociology of cultural processes and history of art, economics and history of ideas, literature and cultural history.
