EAUH 2018 Rome – Urban renewal and resilience cities in comparative perspective
La session veut explorer l'histoire des associations volontaires, se concentrant sur la période 1880-1940, et mettre à jour le rôle qui ont joué les mouvements civiques dans la construction d'une conscience commune fondée sur l'identité et la dimension mémorielle. Seront retenues les propositions qui s'intéressent à un des aspects suivants : les élites professionnelles locales ; les associations nationales et internationales comme arènes de l'engagement de la société civile ; les autorités locales.

Food at the heart of nineteenth-century art
This symposium intends to study the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and nineteenth-century art. For this conference, we welcome papers that discuss how the development of the food industry and the changing notion of “taste” and social mores are reflected in nineteenth-century art in the broadest sense. Papers may concern visual arts including graphic arts in the form of illustrated advertisements and culinary literature, as well as nouveautés (objects which were designed to reflect the evolution of eating and table manners).

Representing the Urban Underbelly in the Nineteenth Century
In conjunction with the exhibitions Easy Virtue: Prostitution in French Art, 1850-1910 (Van Gogh Museum) and Breitner: Girl in Kimono (Rijksmuseum), ESNA (European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art) organizes its annual two-day international conference around the topic of the “urban underbelly” and its depiction in nineteenth-century art. Both exhibitions explore the depiction of women in the margins of urban life – the prostitute, the model, working (class) women, and the women of the entertainment industry.

The starting point of the workshop is the assumption that relatively few and oftentimes socially connected persons were directly involved in early modern financial bubbles and that stock trading was mostly limited geographically. The workshop intends to examine how people dealt with the bursting of the bubbles in the local context.

We wish to deepen discussions and researches around the topic of architecture in emergencies situations, on which we started working with Boundaries' issue n. 2. Even if they are considered as special events – something rarely happening – emergencies are, in many cases, an everyday reality around the globe : from natural to man-made disasters, architecture must face a broad variety of emergency circumstances. Can we speak about “architecture” at a given historical moment or in certain geographic areas?

Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city
This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18th and the 19th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

Cities and Alternatives in the 19th Century
Imagined Civities is an interdisciplinary conference examining the changes in the Victorian city. Dans le cadre des actions du projet « Art nouveau & écologie », le Réseau Art nouveauNetwork organise une série de cinq Laboratoires historiques avec le soutien du programme Culture 2007-2013 de la Commission européenne. Le troisième de ces laboratoires se déroule à Milan, et explore le thème de la « Nature, créativité et production au temps de l'Art nouveau », et se déroulera le samedi 19 novembre 2011 au Palazzo Lombardia à Milan. À l'occasion de cet événement, un panel de chercheurs internationaux débattra de la diversité des expériences de violences populaires survenues au sein de plusieurs pays européens au cours du XIXe siècle. Les communications aborderont différents prismes historiques : social, politique, genre, religieux, culturel, pénal et économique. -

Recent research on migrant communities has witnessed a clear shift towards a more sophisticated understanding of the variety of bonds that link minority groups to the society they live in, as well as to their places of origins. Yet, when it comes to the understanding of past migrations, historical discourse still depends in many ways on traditional categories of analysis, that often poorly reflect the profound originality of the situations under study. This session is an attempt to challenge traditional and “ready-to-go” views on the organization of community life among migrants who lived in the Mediterranean port-cities during the late modern period (17th to 19th centuries). -

Débordements, nuisances et risques industriels
Histoire des conflits de proximité aux XIXe et XXe siècles
Dans le cadre du programme de recherches Cdhte-Pirve 997 : « Débordements des activités industrielles dans la cité. Études de conflits et d’interventions publiques aux XIXe et XXe siècles », une journée d’étude propose le 23 juin 2009 au Cnam d’exposer les façons d’établir les faits de conflits de proximité et d’analyser leurs modes d’expression dans l’espace public. À partir de l’exposé de quelques cas repérés et en cours d’étude, il sera question d’échanger les points de vue sur la pertinence des approches transversales et interdisciplinaires qu’impose ainsi l’étude de ces « conflits de proximité » générés par les débordements industriels. -

Daily Life in Ottoman Towns
What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies, with a specific focus on daily life issues. This seminar is supported by the research program ‘Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe’ EUME with funds of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung. -

Bourgeois Seas. Revisiting the middle classes of Eastern Mediterranean Port Cities
Although there has recently been a notable surge of interest in the study of non-European middle classes as well as of Eastern Mediterranean port cities, most historians working on the field of the Eastern Mediterranean rarely treat port cities as sites where classes were formed and contested and where bourgeoisies asserted their class hegemony. This conference aims at bringing these two critical trends together. Following recent historiographical trends proposals are invited on any port city of the Eastern Mediterranean during the long nineteenth century, until about the aftermath of the First World War. -

Migration and Urban Institutions in the Late Ottoman Reform Period
Les 10 et 11 mai 2007 se tiendra à Berlin, au Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), une rencontre internationale organisée par Ulrike Freitag, Malte Fuhrman, Nora Lafi et Florian Riedler sur le thème "Migrations et Institutions urbaines dans l'Empire Ottoman durant la période des réformes". Cette rencontre, qui aura également une dimension comparatiste et méthodologique, entend rassembler des chercheurs d'horizons divers dans une réflexion sur l'impact des migrations dans les processus de gouvernance urbaine : insertion des migrants dans les structures du travail (corporations...), accès à la notabilité, stigmatisation éventuelle, ségrégation spatiale et sociale, question de la citadinité, question de la modernité administrative urbaine.
