Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821
Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and Balkan areas
In 2021, during the 200th anniversary of the proclamation of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Department of History and Archeology will hold another international conference on "Freedom and Death in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Microhistorical analyses of battles in the Epirotic and the Balkan area". The conference will address issues of Greek historiography, such as the Modern Greek Enlightenment in Epirus, Souli, and the networks of Souliotes; operations in Epirus; the battles of Peta, Philhellenes, Plaka, and Kompoti; Lord Byron on Epirus; the strategies of Ali Pasha; the Epirotic networks in Moldovlachia; and the lives and deaths of revolutionaries. Using modern methodological tools and a microhistory approach to conduct systematic research of both new and old archives, the conference will offer original and interesting approaches to an already rich discussion.

ReThinking Europe in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region
The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies
Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? This conference seeks to reflect on the relationship existing between private gun ownership and the processes of imposition (or re-imposition) of State legitimacy in peacetime as much as during or in the aftermath of armed conflicts. It intends to do so specifically by addressing how the process of modernization and its ensuing tendency to codification and the world wars and their long shadows have had an impact on three aspects of these processes: institutional regulations on civilian possession of firearms from above; juridical debate on limits and rights of State control; practices and culture of gun ownership on the ground.

A New Historiographical Field and its Contribution to the History of Europe
German-Polish history is an innovative and stimulating field in the history of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. We propose to reflect the historiographical and memorial challenges that governed the formation of this field as well as the concepts and methods on which it has since been built. They are now the basis for the dynamics of the field, due in particular to its ability to associate different scales of analysis from the local to the global level. Special attention will be paid to the contribution of Polish-German history and other »bi-national« historiographies like Franco-German history to the project of writing European history especially when it comes to the specific approaches forged or adopted by historians in these fields (transfer, shared history, histoire croisée, connected history, entangled history, Zwischenraum).

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale
Edited Collection
This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

The thought of Henri Bergson (1859-1941), one of the most influential theorists of time of the twentieth century, has primarily been confined to the so-called “continental” tradition of philosophy. In the past few years this has started to change; his work has begun to receive ingenious reassessment from philosophers outside the field of “continental” philosophy in general and within analytic philosophy in particular. The aim of this conference is to capture this moment and use it to provide new perspectives on Bergsonian philosophy, expanding and reassessing Bergson’s legacy and producing a major permutation in the philosophy of time.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

NYU Paris is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach the following undergraduate course in History: “Modern France from the Revolution to the Present”. The course covers changes over time in politics, culture, and social life and pays particular attention to the successive crises that have challenged France's stature, stability, and republican model. These crises include the recurring revolutionary upheavals, the challenges to the nation’s imperial ambitions, the Dreyfus Affair, the two world wars, and the traumas of Vichy and the Algerian war. We also examine the evolving meaning of French citizenship and national identity, conflicts between religion and the republic, and France's efforts post-war to establish and anchor a European community.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History
2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network
The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

Publicity, space and time (Europe, 17th to 19th century)
Although bankruptcy was a rather exceptional situation in the life of a merchant, it has explanatory power for routines of economic stakeholders, for their space of experience and their horizon of expectation. We can therefore use the irregularity of failure as an indicator of regularities. Considering the long, non-uniform and unsteady transition from merchant capitalism to industrial and financial capitalism, we suggest to start a dialogue between modernistes and contemporanéistes. The workshop focuses on the various forms of contextualizing business failure and puts forward three major research axes: Covering and Uncovering: Secrecy and Publicity; Economic Space and Area of Jurisdiction; Temporal Narratives of (In)Solvency.

Policing foreigners in European cities during the long eighteenth-century

“Literary Offenses” and Other Contentious Matter
This one-day conference will address the subject of controversial or polemical texts such as reviews, essays, letters, prefaces and/or postfaces published between 1800 and 1900 in Britain and the United States. It seeks to open fresh approaches to controversies or polemics by focusing on literature and the literary aspects of these questions. Indeed, if controversy can be defined as a debate between two or more parties with different viewpoints before an audience, studies have mainly come from the fields of social sciences and science studies, with some interest in rhetoric and/or argumentation. However, literary controversies are as important as scientific ones for the constitution of the public, democratic debate as it was shaped in Britain and in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Controversies and polemics contributed to legitimizing some literary genres; they gave publicity to new or avant-garde authors; they redefined the content and contours of the public debate.
