Anchoring International Organizations in the Study of Organizational Sociology
This paper session aims to bring together scholars who adopt a sociological perspective to the study of international organizations (IOs). IOs have historically been studied by jurists and later by political scientists through the prism of theories in international relations (IR). In the past two decade, growing scholarship in IR has shifted the focus to analyzing IOs as actors in IR in their own right. To this end, scholars have not only developed new methodologies, traditionally used by anthropologists and organizational sociologists, but have also embraced sociology as a discipline and more precisely the field of organizational sociology. In this way, IOs have been studied as bureaucracies, as organizations within which various actors compete, which comply and produce norms and values. Nowadays, organizational sociology provides a fascinating basis to study IOs not only from within, but also with respect to their environment in a dynamic perspective.

Violence: An international journal

Politics from below in Turkey and beyond
The Symposium on Politics from Below in Turkey and beyond seeks to identify and discuss, in comparative perspective, the dynamics, effects and modes of “politics from below”. We use the broad wording “politics from below” in a heuristic fashion, in order to question classical definitions of the “political”. This framing aims to suggest different understandings of politics. Political science on Turkey and the wider region has long been dominated by top-down and macro approaches, addressing mainly national institutions, political leaders, public discourses and legislative productions.

The first part of the conference will discuss the global jihad and strategies of territoiralization. The jihad narrative, rooted in the colonial period in its current interpretation refers to belonging to the umma, a global nation imagined as the basis for a new identity which, instead of relating to a territory, follows the thread of networks beyond borders. Youths who have chosen the path of jihad thus turn state territories into a cross-border space that is deterritorialized and denationalized.

Research Residential Program at Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies
Fung Global Fellows Program “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance”
Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests?

(Anti-)racism and critical interventions in Europe
Social sciences, policy developments and social movements
In contemporary Europe, we are witnessing the vanishing of anti-racism from political cultures and academic discourses, in favour of an approach that intervenes on immigrants and minorities themselves via public rhetoric on integration. This conference will thus bring together an international community engaging in debates on racism and anti-racism to discuss the analytical approaches and main findings of the European research project TOLERACE - The semantics of tolerance and (anti-)racism in Europe: public bodies and civil society in comparative perspective, coordinated by the Centre for Social Studies.

The tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 provides an opportunity to reflect upon and assess what we have learned—and not learned—about communication and conflict. Some commentators have stated that “everything changed after 9/11”. However, it is important to inquire into what changed and what continues to operate within the conceptual frameworks that have existed for decades, even centuries. Papers are invited for this issue of the Global Media Journal -- Canadian Edition that will focus on the role of communication and media in conflicts and conflict resolution since 9/11. -

International Political Sociology (IPS)
IPS Doctoral Workshops
The Doctoral Workshops initiative is the result of the cooperation in the areas of research and graduate teaching between Sciences Po, PUC-Rio, King's College and Univesity of Victoria during the last three years. It represents an attempt to enhance and structure the ongoing cooperation between these institutions to create the core of a network of institutions promoting a different way to do and to learn International Relations called International Political Sociology. The workshop will investigate the large spectrum of methods going beyond or against the diktat of rational choice theory in IR, ranging from discourse analysis, ethnographic methods, actor-network theory, approaches of limits and boundaries, genetic structuralism, socio-history. The workshop will gather researchers and students who, in the course of their research, are facing the problems posed by the impossibility of shifting from the “national” to the “global” and who consider the international as a central question that determines the conditions of possibility of political practices. -

Issue-Linkages and Regime-Complexes
International politics have been handled by a growing number of international regimes, in extended issue areas such as international economy, security, migration, or the environment. While these regimes were initially meant to address specific issues, their scope have been extended, creating what has been described as “regime complex”, “regime interplay”, or “overlapping regimes”. As a consequence, human rights issues are discussed at the WTO, climate change at the IMF, and gender at the Security Council. The 2010 REPI Workshop will explore the causes and consequences of issue-linkages and regime-complexes. REPI Workshops have a unique format. -
