Penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes: vulnérabilité et subversion

Les deux journées du « Junges Forum » seront consacrées à penser la violence en Afrique au travers de l’expérience des femmes dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. L’objet ici n’est pas de se concentrer sur l’expérience passive, pour peu qu’elle existe, de la violence. Il s’agit bien ici de s’intéresser à la manière de l’appréhender, de la retranscrire, de la faire sienne et de la renverser, qu’elle soit symbolique, sociale, domestique, épistémique, politique ou sexuelle. Le « Junges Forum » vise à accueillir des communications de jeunes chercheur.euse.s (doctorant.e.s et postdoctorant.e.s) pour permettre des échanges interdisciplinaires et discussions ouvertes sur la thématique. Les communications de différents champs de la recherche scientifique (anthropologie, études cinématographiques, études sur le genre, psychologie, sciences historiques, sciences littéraires, sociologie, etc.) devront exclusivement se concentrées sur les aires géographiques du continent africain.

Music, Tradition and Creativity in the Digital Era

New Ethnomusicological Perspectives From the Global South

This Symposium will explore how digital media and new technologies have affected the ways through which musicians, producers and researchers experiment and engage with "traditional" musical forms, in Colombia and in other parts of the world. The participants are invited to share their research results and methodological experimentations in the field of applied ethnomusicology, music pedagogy, performance, digital audio production or digital humanities about the study of the impact of digital technologies about current musical practices. This Symposium will also include the presence of several local musicians and producers who will conduct workshops on "traditional" Colombian music and music from other countries of the global South.

La notion de développement est associée en Éthiopie à la fois à une perception « optimiste » qui met en exergue les réussites du modèle de developmental state mis en œuvre dans le pays, et à une version « pessimiste » du pays qui se concentre sur la réduction de la pauvreté.

The Portuguese Centre for Humanities (CHAM) is an inter-University research unit of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and of the Universidade dos Açores, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. CHAM’s team includes researchers from different disciplinary fields (Archaeology, Art History, Heritage, Literature, Philosophy and History of ideas), different domains of History (Economic, Cultural, Political, Social, Religious, History of Science and History of books and reading practices) and specialists from various geographic spaces. From 2015 to 2020, CHAM’s strategic project will focus on “frontiers”. This multi-disciplinary project considers frontiers as limits that distinguished, throughout history, a plurality of societies and cultures, but also as social and cultural constructs that promoted communication and interaction.

Returning, circulating, staying put: Complex family strategies among African migrants

Call for papers for a thematic issue in the Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales (REMI)

While there is an increase in studies of return migration to Africa and of the transnational family arrangements of African migrants, there is still little evidence of the way complex return mobilities are embedded in family dynamics. Family configurations are changing over time with varying aspirations and decisions to return to the place of origin, to circulate, or to stay put (in theplace of destination). Furthermore, with the return of a family member, new patterns of mobilities within the transnational/translocal family may take place. This special issue proposes to gather researchers working on family and African migration (both within the African continent and beyond) to investigate the question of return (or non-return).

West African migration and development in the light of the current European refugee crisis

Focusing on West African migration to Europe, there are new developments that are not discussed yet and have to be reflected on. European migration policy and the situation of West African migrants in Europe are shaped by the refugee crisis of 2015/16. More than ever the European discourse on migration focuses on migration management and restriction. The discourse emphasizes on fighting the root causes of migration, which should prevent migrants from leaving their West African home countries. Many questions are unanswered yet: How does the refugee crisis from 2015/2016 affect West African migration? How does European migration policy towards West Africa change in light of the refugee crisis? Are there any effects on the development of West Africa.

The positive effect of comprehensive health systems on health outcomes, economic growth and well-being is generally acknowledged, just as of representative policies, scientific-based decisions and trust relationships on social cohesion and respect for political and civil rights in health. Not surprisingly, health policies have become more aligned with the needs of different social groups (e.g. migrants, ethnic minorities, women, LGBT) and of specific medical conditions (e.g. HIV, mental and age-related diseases). Regulators interfere more and more in professional work models and decisions to better control health systems performance and to enhance transparency, but so do empowered citizens in the defence of their rights as patients.

These days communication and information are characterized by immediacy, speed, and interactivity. Facebook and Instagram accounts, YouTube channels, and blogs transmit a perpetual flow of information, shared videos, pictures, and other content which creates networks and incentivizes sharing in a constantly evolving language. Contemporary mass media therefore ensures that, today more than ever, people in African countries are at the same time autonomous producers and users of a debate, through partly traditional, partly innovative channels, about life in Africa and African communities’ identity, with a tale that travels across the borders of individual countries and the continent itself.

Time, Space, and Power in Qualitative Research on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Region and Europe

Since the start of the 21^stcentury seemingly unpredictable change, in all its different guises, has fueled the preoccupations of academic and non-academic publics. The financial crisis, the “Arab Spring”, protest movements in southern Europe, the rise of Daesh and right-wing populism, as well as the environmental crisis all make it very difficult to rely on Francis Fukuyama’s theory of “end of history”, which now seems to merely reflect the euphoria of liberal elites following the collapse of the Soviet Union (1992). This workshop intends to reflect more closely on the webs of power affecting both the researcher and‚ the researched when they intend to represent change.

Now more than ever, gender as an analytical concept is being heavily contested from diverse quarters inside as well as outside academia. The panel discussion addresses key questions of how to teach gender as critical theory in the light of current societal and political tensions on the one hand and institutional constraints inside the university on the other hand. How can we teach “critique”? What does teaching gender mean in terms of methods and topics? The debate on asylum and migration is bringing to light the theme of return; not that of an old migrant returning to his country of origin after a lifetime of work, but that of the younger generations who still find themselves in the midst of an existential and professional journey. There are more and more questions on the phenomenon of asylum seekers forced to deal with this step due to their asylum request being denied or their integration into society failing, as well as on the cases in which migrants return home deliberately out of choice with an enterprise project possibly favored by national and international policies.

Taking as a point of departure that since the decline – if not the evaporation – of class analysis in the 1980s, less systematic attention has been paid to the dividing lines of African societies, this workshop wants to take the idea of a social space seriously and to explore, with both theoretical imagination and empirical rigour, the divisions of African social spaces in their historical and multi-layered strata, their production and the way they are practically experienced by social actors.
