Violence: An international journal
Violence: An international journal is launching a call for papers on the theme “Violence and environmental crisis”. Can we speak about violence when describing biodiversity loss, the destruction of natural sanctuaries like Amazonia and the Great Barrier Reef, or when observing the spillage of illegally polluting wastes? How long is the chain of violence related to environmental crisis? And who are the perpetrators and the victims of such violence? In which way can we speak about violence, and can this violence be legitimated or condemned? All this raises theoretical, normative, linguistic and empirical questions to be discussed in the articles fostered by this call.

Approaches and methods
In recent decades, more and more violent conflicts have a religious or cultural dimension and take place between groups adhering to different religious or secular visions of the state and society. When groups with different worldviews are required to share the same (social, political, virtual, economic, or military) space, this can lead to tensions and give rise to violence—ranging from offensive language to physical attacks and open warfare.

On 9 and 10 March 2017, the Jewish Museum of Belgium in collaboration with CegeSoma organizes an international colloquium at the Royal Library of Belgium (Brussels). The violence perpetrated against minorities is one key issue, while their legal protection, is another. The conference tackles the period from 1912 to 1923. Lectures by historians from Europe, North America and the Middle East will be alternated with discussions. Attention will also be given to contemporary issues related to these questions.

The Transatlantic Embrace: Spanish Civil War in America’s Intimate Distance
Spanish Civil War has been studied under its multiple angles. This can also be said about the literature concerning this topic: novels, poems, and all literary forms generated by this armed conflict (both by Spanish and foreign intellectuals) have been commented by academic criticism from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. However, fewer approaches have set the axis of their critical focus on the importance of the Spanish conflict in America and its decisive relevance as a part of a phenomenon that is also American. This special number of the FORMA journal sets out to give a voice to all types of contributions able to shed a new light on this fundamental aspect of the war, whose causes and consequences are clearly rooted in Spain, but whose horizon overflows the peninsular and continental borders and requires an inevitably transatlantic point of view.

Philipp Altmann, Deniz Günce Demirhisar and Jacob Mwathi Mati are organizing a special edition on "Social Movements of the Global South – Methodological and Theoretical Considerations". Their aim is to "bring together research on social movements worldwide that break with the Eurocentric bias of social movement theory and try to develop both theories and methodologies apt to understand action, discourse or outcomes of social movements in the Global South".

Costs and Alternatives to Border Fencing
More border walls and border fences are being built every year all across the world. Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Tunisia are among the latest to announce yet another border fence. Twenty-five years ago it was believed that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reconfiguration of international relations would open an age of globalization in which States would become obsolete, ushering in a world without borders. In the wake of 9/11, however, borders came back in light, new borders were created and new border walls erected. In the wake of the Arab Spring, came even more border barriers and walls, symbols that were thought to have disappeared with the collapse of the bipolar international system. Today, they reinforce borderlines the world over, transforming both soft and semi-permeable borders alike into sealed, exclusionary hard borders. Walls are symbols of identity reaffirmation, markers of State sovereignty, instruments of dissociation, locus of a growing violence.

Stakes, practices and influences of non-state actors (18th-21st centuries)
Since the end of the Cold war, the activity of non-State actors has attracted considerable attention as part of an increasingly globalised governance and diplomacy. As Richard Langhorne has remarked, the 1961 Congress of Vienna ‘marked both the culmination and the beginning of the end of classical diplomacy’, in which ‘the State ha[d] been, since the seventeenth century, the principal and sometimes the only, effective actor’. As Langhorne and Hamilton have convincingly argued in The Practice of Diplomacy, today’s diplomacy is characterised by a ‘blurring [of] the distinctions between what is diplomatic activity and what is not, and who, therefore are diplomats and who are not’.Quite revealing of this change on the international diplomatic stage is the proliferation and the increased importance of multifarious non-State actors (NSA). The waning of classical State diplomacy has thus been paralleled by the advent of transnational organisations, which, whether public or private, now play a key role in the conduct of diplomacy.

Les organisateurs de cette journée d’étude s'intéressent aux initiatives visant à introduire des projets innovants dans les villes, en particulier les villes ayant subi des transformations radicales ces vingt dernières années. Nous nous intéressons à des situations où les approches traditionnelles sont influencées par des stratégies nouvelles initiées par des groupes de pression composés d’architectes/designers, de groupes d’habitants ou des gouvernements locaux (municipalités ou autre). Cette journée d’étude souhaite explorer la question du recours à l’expertise des habitants ou des spécialistes du terrain dans le domaine de la rénovation urbaine : cette expertise est-elle intégrée dans des projets ? Comment ? Peut-elle servir à répondre au phénomène accru de fragmentation urbaine ?

Tais abusos dão origem ao ódio moral, ao ressentimento e à indignação para com os agressores, e destes em relação aos testemunhos e às vítimas. Uma vez os regimes autoritários chegados ao fim, as instituições são confrontadas com o legado duma história recente de medo e opressão e com uma série de perguntas cruciais. Este passado deveria receber uma voz ou deveria ser silenciado? A raiva das vítimas deveria ser contada ou suprimida? As contas com o passado devem permanecer fechadas para manter a paz ou devem ser acertadas para fazer justiça? -

A journey through the Genocide of Tutsi
Organized in Rwanda by the Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center. The Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center based in Kigali, Rwanda continues their two/three-week US/Rwanda exchange program in order to deepen students’, researchers’, and artists’ knowledge of the Rwandan genocide. In the last years, the program started in 2004 has enabled teachers and students from Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, Singapore, Mexico, UK, France, Belgium, Spain, and the USA to develop narratives that engage questions of social justice, conflict resolution, and peace building. The program has involved theater artists, filmmakers, academicians, researches, and students from various disciplines and countries, whose practice engages questions of peace building. -

Foreign Language Film Conference V
Submissions are invited for the fifth Foreign Language Film Conference, on the theme of Rights and Representations. In this historic setting of the American South, and in conjunction with Birmingham's 50th anniversary remembrance of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing, FLFC celebrates civil and human rights. Scholars will consider the question of civil rights in international cinematic traditions. How does film as an art and a genre represent civil rights, and human rights? What are the places of rebellion, terrorism, or non-violent resistance in forging individual freedoms, and how is this reflected in national cinematic traditions? How do international films address issues of discrimination, violence, repression, the struggle for social equality ? On the pedagogical side of the question, how do films about civil rights teach their viewers about international cultural and political traditions and movements ? How are these films incorporated into classroom discussions of global civil rights ? -

Forced migrations and youth welfare policies of the 19th and 20th centuries
La plupart des jeunes placés en institution dans le cadre des politiques de protection de l’enfance ont été en réalité déplacés, non seulement dans le but des les éloigner de chez eux, mais aussi en vertu d’une volonté de les enraciner ailleurs. Ainsi, certaines politiques mettent en œuvre un programme raisonné de déplacement massif de populations juvéniles, souvent au-delà des frontières nationales, selon des visées colonisatrices, du fait de conjonctures politiques spécifiques – guerres et changements de régimes, d’utopies pédagogiques et idéologiques, ou de stratégies institutionnelles particulières. Le numéro 14 de la Revue d'histoire de l'enfance « irrégulière » portera sur les politiques migratoires contraintes concernant les jeunes placés en institution dans l'objectif de comprendre comment ces enfants (dé)placés deviennent des enjeux de pouvoir, des acteurs des relations internationales, des sujets politiques sans droits politiques. -

Plus de vingt ans après la chute du Mur, ce colloque international permettra de poser la question du retour du mur/barrière en relations internationales et, le cas échéant, d'analyser les facteurs qui ont conduit à cette résurgence, sinon dans les faits, du moins dans les discours. L'événement, organisé par la Chaire Raoul-Dandurand en études stratégiques et diplomatiques en collaboration avec l’Association for Borderlands Studies, aura lieu à l'université du Québec à Montréal, Québec, Canada les 19 et 20 mai 2011.Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the question still remains “Do good fences still make good neighbours”? Since the Great Wall of China, construction of which began under the Qin dynasty, the Antonine Wall, built in Scotland to support Hadrian's Wall, the Roman "Limes" or the Danevirk fence, the "wall" has been a constant in the protection of defined entities claiming sovereignty, East and West. But is the wall more than an historical relict for the management of borders? In recent years the wall has been given renewed vigour in North America, particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border, and in Israel, where the old Green line has been transformed into a wall separating Arab from Israeli. But the success of these new walls in the development of friendly and orderly relations between nations (or indeed, within nations) remains unclear. What role does the wall play in the development of security and insecurity? Do walls contribute to a sense of insecurity as much as they assuage fears and create a sense of security for those ‘behind the line’? Exactly what kind of security is associated with border walls? -
