Italy and Yugoslavia in the Interwar Period
Monographic issue of “Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea”
The signing of the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920 made it possible to find a solution to the Italian-Yugoslav dispute over the north-eastern Adriatic border, a solution that would last substantially until the Italian invasion of the neighbouring kingdom in World War 2. Relations between Italy and Yugoslavia, particularly since the end of the 1920s, with the beginning of the more decidedly revisionist phase of fascist foreign policy regarding the structures of the Danubian-Balkan area, were never easy. However, the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo represented an undoubtedly important moment, which greatly contributed to restore a climate of collaboration between the two countries, heavily jeopardized by border nationalism and by the D’Annunzio’s “impresa di Fiume”, interrupted precisely by the Treaty of Rapallo.

ReThinking Europe in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region
The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies
Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? The exit from war in Danubian Europe: a new era? (1918-1924)
Using the Hungarian case as a springboard, and broadening the perspective to the whole of Danubian Europe, the conference seeks to address the following questions: the new social bonds emerging from the transformation brought about by the Paris Peace Conference; social, intellectual and (or) regional impact of changes, conflicts and international confrontations between 1918 and 1924. The conference aims to rise to the challenge of writing comparative social histories of this historical moment.

The challenging of ideological, institutional and (geo)political heritage
This conference aims at rethinking the legacy of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through the prism of its ongoing contestations, with a focus on the current trends and deliberate political efforts that challenge the major achievements of Velvet Revolutions as well as the outcomes of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. 1989 launched a process that continues to this day. Dissent Versus Conformism in the Nordic, Baltic and Black Sea Areas
The tenth annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies in Romania
In the meanwhile, conformism seems to have pervaded larger categories of public in East-Central Europe and beyond and new “illiberal democracies” evolved. A composite of authoritarian leader and godfather have taken the reins of power in the area. Populist parties and movements are on the rise. Resurgent nationalisms are again offered as a substitute to solutions. The refugee crisis lingers on and no common decisions have been adopted within the EU to solve it on the basis of the European values. The EU institutions are in need of reform and decisions on the course of the organization and its future enlargement process are still pending. The conference aims at analyzing two often interrelated phenomena: dissent and conformism.

Bruxelles
Historians are increasingly aware that early modern diplomacy encompassed far more than formally appointed ambassadors and their official negotiations. Rather, numerous actors engaged in international relations, and they did so in an astonishingly wide array of formal and informal positions. They also had a variety of diverse tools at their disposal for lobbying and achieving their various missions. This conference aims to examine a field that a number of historians and art historians have started to analyze in the last two decades, but which has seldom been explicitly delineated or discussed in a comparative fashion: strategies of cultural and public diplomacy in the early modern Habsburg world (1550-1750). Therefore, this conference focuses on the different tactics employed by the representatives of foreign nations and groups – both official and unofficial – in influencing public opinion abroad and, in doing so, attempting to create a beneficial environment for their diplomatic engagements.

France and the European Union – Part-time teaching post at New York University (NYU) Paris
The course France & the European Union investigates the political economy of European integration from the end of the Second World War to present day with a particular focus on the role played by France in this development. It considers the incentives that have led an ever-larger group of European nations to form multilateral agreements around a growing range of policies that now incorporate such diverse spheres as defense, economics, and human rights. It then turns to the challenges Europe faces in maintaining the European Union (EU) in the face of growing skepticism among national electorates as well as attempts to undermine the EU (by Russia) or withdraw support from it (by the U.K. and the U.S.).

Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge
Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present
The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised. The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Transnational Networks and the British Empire (Ca. 18-20th centuries)
This workshop intends to bring together research scholars of history and affiliated fields working on transnational networks fostered through the British Empire. We wish to focus on how certain forms of the “empire”, the “colony”, and the “outside” mutually constituted each other. Such an approach, we believe, could illumine the dense transnational convergences that shape the political, the economic, the social, and the cultural in various locations simultaneously.

The debate on asylum and migration is bringing to light the theme of return; not that of an old migrant returning to his country of origin after a lifetime of work, but that of the younger generations who still find themselves in the midst of an existential and professional journey. There are more and more questions on the phenomenon of asylum seekers forced to deal with this step due to their asylum request being denied or their integration into society failing, as well as on the cases in which migrants return home deliberately out of choice with an enterprise project possibly favored by national and international policies.
