Welcome to higher education? New and potential students in England and France
The conference will explore the notion of “welcome” at university in its broader sense, including practical and pedagogical support offered to first-year students and students on international mobility programmes. It will reflect on the role of higher education institutions and transnational organisations in defining and attending to the needs of students in France and the UK. A key question for the conference relates to the discursive process of inclusion/exclusion of students and would-be students, in the context of increasing internationalisation of education and growing managerialism and marketisation of universities – the current legislative draft of the French national research programme (Loi de programmation pluriannuelle de la recherche) seems to be an example of these processes.

New obstacles to migration, new tactics among migrants
This conference will explore the transformation in the access to territory, mobility and rights. We will explore how the public image of refugees is transformed by xenophobic discourse and the everyday management of asylum rights, including the role of the private sector and the subsequent mobility of refugees. We will further explore the functioning of the access to rights of EU-migrants and the everyday functioning of other migration policies, including the access to healthcare, the detention of migrants and the access to citizenship. Finally, we will explore the political and electoral mobilisations of and in solidarity to migrants and minorities, including artistic expression, developed in answer to the new obstacles to migration.

Maternal Sacrifice in Jewish Culture
Rethinking Sacrifice from a Maternal Perspective in Religion, Art, and Culture
Rethinking Nancy Jay’s opposition between sacrifice and childbirth in what she defines a “remedy for having been born of woman”, the conference aims to explore new approaches to the maternal sacrifice as a ritual, as a narrative, and as a metaphor in the context of Jewish culture.

Gendered Species: Colette, Gender and Sexual Identities
Espèces genrées : Colette, le genre et les identités sexuées
Although French woman writer Colette was indifferent to and even critical of the feminist movement of the early 1900s, in the way she lived her life as in her fiction, she exemplified financial and social independence and shame-free sexuality, or what would be call today “gender fluidity”. This international conference will show how Colette represents a vibrant and radical expression of feminism in tune with the #MeToo spirit in today's society

Prisons of Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany : Questioning Prison Violence
Almost twenty years after the European Court of Human Rights affirmed the right to decent conditions of detention, has this aspiration for a violence-free sentence succeeded in counteracting operation modes usually described as inherent to prison? Has the European project for common minimum standards succeeded in overcoming national penological conceptions and professional cultures, in other words overcoming the historical inertia of prison? What resistance/adaptation strategies have deployed prison administrations in response to these reform injunctions? In view of these experiences, what are the ways out of prison violence? Can civil society actors force these transformations? In particular, can lawyers help maintaining vigilance? The Seminar is held as part of the European Lawyers' Day and will bring together former detainees, researchers, civil society leaders and lawyers to discuss the issue of prison violence as is manifest in Western (Germany, France) and Eastern former soviet (Russia, Ukraine) European prison systems.

Responsibility, resistance and resurgence in the Asia Pacific
The Asia Pacific region more broadly also finds itself living in troubled times. Environmental issues such as climate change, pollution and resource scarcity continue to clash with visions and ideologies for economic prosperity, while social and political issues such as economic disparity, human right abuses and geopolitical conflicts persist and take on new forms. Within this context, unbridled tourism growth in the Asia Pacific region is on the rise as governmental and private industry initiatives endeavor to combat issues of poverty, gender inequality, rural revitalization, post-disaster recovery, and sustainable development goals through sustained tourism growth.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Antibio-addicts? Defining and governing antimicrobial resistance in the age of One Health
The power of antimicrobials is now weakened. Since the “magic bullets” have been introduced in medicine and agriculture in the late 1940s, numerous warnings about the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have been relayed by international agencies, political leaders, scientists and medical practitioners, or various NGOs. These concerns have highlighted the extent and great diversity of antimicrobial use in a world that has proved to be “antibio-addicted”. Recently the AMR problem seems to have been institutionalized and framed in innovative forms.

European Conference on Risk Perception
Behaviour, Management and Response
The actual behaviour of individuals and government entities before, during, and immediately after a disaster can dramatically affect the impact, vulnerability, recovery time and resilience. Despite decades of research on disaster risk and perception, studies on actual damages and responses after disasters, decision-making tools, and actionable knowledge of the actual behaviour of the populations are still a challenge. Uncertainty derives from lack of information, lack of trust, alternatives, previous experience, but also segregation, oppression, etc. This conference is addressing the knowledge gap between risk perception, evacuation, response, and adaptation behaviour. It aims to build a multidisciplinary panoramic European view.

Biographies, mobilités et politiques migratoires
Midterm conference of the Research Network “Sociology of Migration” of the European Sociological Association

Adventures of Identity: From the Double to the Avatar
Recent developments in image-making techniques have resulted in a blurring of the threshold between the image world and the real world. Immersive and interactive virtual environments elicit in the perceiver a strong feeling of being incorporated into an autonomous world. Such incorporation can be conveyed by the “avatar”, a digital proxy through which the subject interacts with synthetic objects or other avatars. By convening scholars from different disciplines, the colloquium aims to critically address these multifarious issues, discussing the problematic and controversial status of the avatar, which is in urgent need of definition.

Migrants in the globalizing city
Spaces, places and mobilities in Asia, Europe and the Middle East
While migrant presence and integration have shaped public debate and scientific enquiry for some time now, it has often been examined through eurocentric notions such as assimilation, multiculturalism and, more recently, cosmopolitanism. Yet, it is clear that not only Europe (or the Western World) has to deal with migration related issues, countries in Asia and the Middle East are also experiencing high inflows of variously skilled migrants, while the robustness of their borders are frequently tested by undocumented migrants and refugees. This conference proposes to give focus to globalising cities from Asia, Europe and the Middle East which are marked by the diversity of their population and distinct ways of managing migrant diversity.
