This conference brings together curators, artists, scholars, and other intellectuals and cultural activists working on East-Central European heritage, to reflect on how the main trends of decolonial debate are intersecting in practical and theoretical terms with the heritage sector, with a particular focus on museums in the region. The conference will place special emphasis on mapping both the range of colonial histories embedded in, as well as decolonial approaches to, museum collections and practices in East-Central Europe.

Circulation multilingue des savoirs et histoires transnationales de la géographie

Durant les cinquante dernières années, le champ de l’histoire de la géographie a connu un mouvement de transformation de ces approches, passant d’une lecture par les écoles nationales à une appréhension par la circulation des savoirs et des connaissances à différentes échelles. L’histoire des sciences et de la géographe a ainsi incorporé des concepts tels que « transit », « reseaux », « mobilités», « transferts », « circulations », « centres de calcul », « espaces de connaissance », « géographie des sciences », « mobilité spatiale de la connaissance », « geographies de la lecture et du livre », etc. Plus récemment, un tournant a émergé, qui considère les dynamiques et les nécessités de décoloniser l’histoire de la géographie et de la production de savoirs géographiques. Cette thématique apparaît aujourd’hui comme l’une des plus actives dans le champ de l’histoire de la géographie.

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

By all measures, Germany played an overwhelming role in the development of philology and linguistics during the 19th century. This ascendancy rests on the transmission to other national academies of theoretical constructs and views, methods and institutional practices. On the other hand, German philological and linguistic ideas, methods and institutions were not constituted in isolation from the rest of the world : Transfers to the German-speaking world must also be taken into account.

This is an International Conference of advanced training and postgraduate education and research in the History of Science field, although following an interdisciplinary and collaborative perspective, open to a specialized public as well as other interested and general public. Our main purpose is to value the biographical methodology approach in academic training and scholarly research, not just for the historiographic practice, where it is of increasing interest the conjunction between History of Science and Intellectual History, but also with regard to broader contexts of production and incorporation of knowledge both by the concerned communities and by a socially and publicly responsible society.

Semantic Web for Scientific Heritage

SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop

Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Eros plays a central role in Western thought. In the philosophical and spiritual traditions, it usually refers to physical love and desire. Eros is a recurring character in the pre-Socratic cosmogonies, and it is the main impulse of the philosophical quest for truth in Plato’s Phaedrus. This Special Topics issue of PhænEx wishes to give a new impulse to philosophical reflections on this fundamental and ambiguous phenomenon, following an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of phenomenology, post-structuralism, and social sciences (psychology, sociology, sexology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.).

Shaping the Brain

In the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period

The brain has, throughout history, been considered an important achievement in the creation of man, although often secondary to the soul and the heart. Our knowledge about how the brain has been conceived in the past is, however, very fractional, especially for the late Medieval and early modern periods. This conference looks to re-situate the question of knowing the brain anew in a dialogue between medicine (anatomy, physiology and pathology) and natural philosophy (inter alia physics, biology and psychology).

Alexandre Koyré: Transatlantic perspectives

This symposium commemorates the 50^th anniversary of Koyré's death by focusing on his legacy in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, pioneers of the history of science such as Thomas S. Kuhn, I. B. Cohen, Marshall Clagett, Gérald Holton or Charles Gillispie have all admitted his influence on the discipline. The participants will discuss Koyré's impact on the American intellectual landscape and the reception of his ideas among the historians and philosophers who sought to professionalize the teaching of the history of science in the United States.
