  Private Wars: legitimacy, finance and the social contract

  A conference on the public/private boundary in warfare

  The outsourcing of much military labour – to the private sector, and to other publics – has a long-standing historical basis that raises serious questions about the relationship between war, the state and society. Yet, were the boundaries between public and private ever clear? If the global wars of the twentieth century were "total" for some belligerents, what of the millions who served for other kings, other countries and other empires prior to the emergence of the nation state? While much military history and military sociology has been written in national frames, did these frames ever adequately explain the nature of war? What of the private and supranational armies who played such important roles in the making of the modern world?

  Medieval culture and war conference

  It is an undeniable fact of human history that war has been on many occasions and in many different historical contexts a powerful stimulus for innovations and change in culture, politicals, and thought. During periods of transition warfare had a crucial role in medieval societies. Following previous meetings in Leeds (2016), Lisbon (2017) and Brussels (2018) the 2019 Medieval Culture and War Conference will be held in Athens in the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). The conference will focus on ‘Transformation, Renovation, and Continuity’.

  The Allied Occupation of Germany Revisited

  New Research on the Western Zones of Occupation, 1945-1949

  The Allied occupation of Western Germany after the Second World War has long constituted a classic component in academic histories of post-war Germany. After having been the subject of sustained scholarly attention in the 1970s and 1980s, the subject has subsequently faced a decline in academic interest. This two-day conference is intended to showcase new research and provide a forum for the presentation of innovative approaches to the history of the three western zones of occupation. It also aims to stimulate dialogue between historians of the different zones of occupation and so bring together hitherto almost entirely segregated historiographies. We are inviting papers from both emerging scholars and established specialists.

  L’économie templière en Occident : patrimoines, commerce, finances

  Ce colloque tentera de dresser le bilan des recherches sur l’économie templière : fondements idéologiques et soutiens familiaux qui permirent son enracinement territorial ; géographie des implantations et structuration du temporel ; fonctionnement et diversification des activités des maisons templières ; entreprises de construction et conception des bâtiments économiques ; comparaison des modèles et programmes économiques avec le monachisme cistercien ; rôles et limites des privilèges commerciaux qui leur ont été accordés, notamment dans l’aire des foires de Champagne ; expertise financière et développement des techniques bancaires ; participation à l’essor de la navigation maritime et commande de navires.

  Vivre ensemble dans une société multiculturelle

  Dans le cadre de l’EMUNI, l’Université de Catane organise une « école d’été » sur les sociétés multiculturelles. La première semaine est consacrée au dialogue interculturel dans le bassin méditerranéen et aux relations politiques et économiques des pays de la Méditerranée. La deuxième semaine comprend deux séminaires de littérature, l’un sur l’histoire du genre et la littérature féminine, l’autre sur l’observation du territoire à partir de la mer.

  Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine

  L'Institut universitaire européen organise les 6 et 7 décembre 2010 une conférence internationale sur le thème « Révoltes populaires et violences dans l’Europe du XIXe siècle. Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine ». À l'occasion de cet événement, un panel de chercheurs internationaux débattra de la diversité des expériences de violences populaires survenues au sein de plusieurs pays européens au cours du XIXe siècle. Les communications aborderont différents prismes historiques : social, politique, genre, religieux, culturel, pénal et économique.
