Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960
Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

Online Course on the US Original Constitution and its Reception in Brazil
In times of Covid19, the Federal University of Paraiba, UFPB, opens this course to the global audience. Students from the world will have the opportunity to discuss the USA and Brazil's constitutional history from the Founding Era to the end of the nineteenth century with an instructor and Brazilian students of its Graduate Program in Law. The UFPB offers these lectures through the Google Meet platform with a limited number of spots for better development of the studies and discussions amongst participants. Some international scholars will take part in the course as special guests presenting seminars about their newly published books or legal articles in which they are authors on subjects connected to constitutional matters. 100% online course.

The South Atlantic route and the business of the maritime transport of migrants (1870-1960)
The objective is to propose a special issue to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, by contributing for the understanding of the business of emigrant maritime transport from the Belle Epoque until the end of the 1960s. The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

De Gruyter's
De Gruyter and the team of the Art Market Dictionary (AMD) are currently looking for authors interested in contributing to their encyclopedia project. The AMD is the first reference work providing encompassing information on commercial art galleries, dealers, auction houses, fairs and advisers in Europe, the USA and Canada in the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to appear in 2020, it will be published in print and as an online searchable database. It is edited by Johannes Nathan and supported by a number of specialized institutions such as the Getty Research Institute, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, or the Archives of American Art.

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War
What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.

In this year marking the 170th anniversary of Carl Fabergé, the museum dedicated its annual academic conference to Carl Fabergé, his firm's activities in Russia and abroad, its place within Russian culture as well as to Fabergé's influence on modern and contemporary jeweler’s art.

How to construct it, how to read it, what to learn from it
The purpose of the workshop is to gather scholars who have worked with historic central bank balance sheets to put these current debates into a longer-term perspective. We particularly welcome contributions that highlight the challenges posed by analyzing balance sheets both in a cross section and over time, notably by potentially different meanings of balance sheet categories and changes in the underlying operations.

There are myriad examples of this in Chilean history. Taking history, political philosophy and political economy as the starting points, we invite doctoral candidates, researchers and academics to participate in this truly trans disciplinary space of debate, reflection and feedback whose goal is not only to unite a community of researchers into “the political” in the republican period but also to select the best works presented for a future publication in the format of a collective work or a special dossier of a scientific publication.

Journée d'études organisée le 29 avril 2011 à la Maison de la recherche de Paris 3, par CREW-OPA (Paris 3) et le CENA (EHESS). Cette journée d'études explorera les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Cette période a en effet connu un très profond renouvellement historiographique, à tel point que nombre d'historiens remettent en cause le terme de « Gilded Age » (Âge du Toc) souvent associé à ce moment. Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même : la journée d'études explorera donc, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de ces développements historiographiques, les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays. -

La période de l'histoire des États-Unis allant de la fin de la guerre de Sécession au tournant du XXe siècle a connu un très profond renouvellement historiographique, à tel point que nombre d'historiens remettent en cause le terme de « Gilded Age » (Âge du Toc) souvent associé à ce moment. Malgré tout, ces réinterprétations oublient ce qui était au cœur de l'expression elle-même: à savoir les nouvelles relations, vues comme problématiques, entre des élus politiques à la tête d'un État fédéral renforcé par la guerre, et des hommes d'affaires dont le poids et la fonction sont transformées par l'industrialisation très rapide du pays. Nous cherchons donc des propositions de communications pour une journée d'études qui explorent, à la lumière de nouvelles recherches et de cette nouvelle historiographie, les liens entre monde des affaires et monde politique aux États-Unis, mais également dans d'autres pays (dans une perspective comparatiste) dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. -
