Multi-ethnic cities in the Mediterranean world

This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of Mediterranean cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

New research on the History of Chinese gardens and landscapes

Organised by Dr Jan Woudstra in conjunction with the Gardens Trust, the event will look at new discoveries in the field from both professionals and post-graduate students from around the world. Dr Alison Hardie will introduce the conference and outline the importance that Maggie Keswick’s 1978 book The Chinese Garden, History Art and Architecture has played in the subject. It is a unique opportunity to hear speakers from UK and International institutions to present their new research in the field. Talks will cover subjects as wide-ranging as Jesuit water landscapes, gardens as museums, Feng Shui symbolism and botanical watercolours.

Its history is one of dreams, achievements and loss. As such, it also bears a history of identity. To know the history of cities is to understand our own place in the contemporaneity. The past is always seen through the eyes of the present and can only be understood as such. On the occasion of the 261^st anniversary of the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, we invite scholars and experts in the fields of heritage studies, digital humanities, history, history of art and information technology to share and debate their experience and knowledge on digital heritage.

This growth – which accelerated after each World War, and became a truly global phenomenon in the second half of the XX^th century – necessitated the construction of large and well-equipped office buildings, which were often grouped together in the "administrative districts" of capitals and other major cities.

Rehabilitation and Re-use of Modern Movement Architecture

Seminar gathering in Lisbon international experts in architecture rehabilitation and urbanism of the Modern Movement. The seminar organized by Docomomo International will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, on the 27th of March. In the last decades, the architectural heritage of the Modern Movement appeared more at risk than during any other period. At the end of the 1980s, many modern masterpieces had already been demolished or had changed beyond recognition. This seminar about Rehabilitation and Re-use of the Modern Movement Architecture aims at bringing together inspiring viewpoints about this global problem.

The language of the conference will be English, but we might organize sessions in French provided we have enough proposals in this language.

The event will consist of a two day colloquium, organized at the University of Witwaterstrand (Wits) and University of Johannesburg (UJ); one day of site visits to some of emblematic neighbourhoods of Johannesburg as far as the subject of urban memory in South Africa is concerned. It is anticipated that the academic fields represented will range from urban history, geography, anthropology, heritage studies and urban sociology. The intention is to go beyond the frame of "African studies" and to connect experiments and reflections from all corners of what is now a global issue.
