What have Mesopotamian Empires ever done for their people? Tracking the macro in the micro

In this workshop, we aim to take the view from below and investigate in what way imperial dynamics may have affected the lifeways of people in their territories. The basic questions of this workshop are: How did the empires of the Ancient Near East affect the lives of ordinary people in their realm? To which extent was rural life and life in smaller towns permeated by imperial agents and policies, hence by imperial dynamics?

We are not only interested in the manifestations and history of these scenes, but also in how fandom themselves participate in the creation and distribution of historical discourse about the objects of their affection. The conference organisers invite presentations on economy and memory, in particular, but not limited to the context of post-socialist economic transformations in East-Central Europe, as well as their interactions with parallel economic processes in other parts of the world. They may be based on a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including history, sociology, anthropology, economics, literary and film studies, and others. While the focal point for most economic transformations in question is the 1990s, we invite speakers to address these changes in the context of their longer histories with attention to the genealogy of shifts in economic thought through the 20th century and related memory processes.

Government by Expertise: Technocrats and Technocracy in Western Europe, 1914-1973

Technocracy is the political swearword of our times. From the multiple crises of the European Union to the recent elections in the United States, the role of experts in public governance is often invoked as one of the main sources for the political ills of contemporary society, responsible for the exacerbation of social inequalities, the decline in the acceptance of political institutions, and the rise of populist movements. This conference will look at the genealogy of technocracy and the trajectories of various groups of “experts” in western Europe’s mid-20^th century.

The role of health and social welfare policies in European inclusion and exclusion processes

Health risks created by population movement, and policy responses to them, have been an integral part of European history since the early modern period. They have helped to shape wider cultural ideas on economic risks, attitudes to integration, and enlargement of the EU. Twenty first century Europe is addressing new questions and challenges: how to live together, and include new territories and new populations and cultures without compromising our health, both personal and economic. These have contemporary policy implications. Our aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the cultural heritages and roots of the European welfare model.

La 15^e conférence internationale sur les migrations se tiendra du 18 au 20 juin 2015 à Dudelange au Luxembourg. Portée par un réseau d'institution germanophone, cette conférence accepte les communications en anglais et en allemand. La thématique retenue cette année porte sur « Migration et genre » et cherchera à faire le point sur la recherche sur les rapports de sexe et de genre dans les migrations. Les perspectives suivantes seront particulièrement appréciées par les organisateurs : approche théorique sur la thématique du genre et des migrations ; représentations publiques et médiatiques du genre et des migrations ; sexualité, corps et identité en contexte de migration ; migration, genre et culture de la mémoire.

Living in European Borderlands - International Workshop

Borderlands studies look beyond the historical facticity of territorial borders by reflecting their porousness and the actual processes of their crossing and maintenance. We invite scholars from anthropology, sociology, human geography, history and related fields working on European borderlands to present their research on everyday practices and experiences of living in a borderland. Papers can be empirical and/or conceptual relating to: dwelling, work and consumption, identity constructions, cross-border suburbanisation and urban/rural relations in borderlands. We are particularly interested in work on conceptual and methodological problems and in comparative and historical approaches.

Revisiting the Historical Connections between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in a Global Context

The workshop posits that after 1945, the interconnectedness of questions of nutrition, agriculture and poverty became a central aspect of international governance, and that issues of food and agriculture posed particular challenges to national sovereignty. We thus approach the history of FAO as a history of the ideas and practices of economic and social ‘development’ embedded in local, regional, national, and global contexts and with implications on all these levels. We propose to examine the process by which the FAO facilitated the institutionalisation and globalisation of debates on agricultural production and food security, how it integrated previous international and transnational networks, and how it navigated the tension between agrarian commercialisation and rural welfare during the Cold War and Decolonisation.

Sous forme d'atelier, cette journée d'études explore, en croisant les approches, la dette publique comme lieu du débat et du conflit politiques en Europe et aux États-Unis depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle. En rassemblant des études de cas sur ce nœud entre la politique (notamment dans sa dimension sociale) et l'endettement de l'État, elle propose de réinterroger certaines notions centrales à notre compréhension du fonctionnement politique du monde contemporain, et tout particulièrement la souveraineté, la citoyenneté, la démocratie et la solidarité.
