Revolution and Contemporary Forms of Critique

Toward « Revolution 13/13 »

This colloquium will constitute a prolegomenon to the seminar series “Revolution 13/13” that will run at the Columbia Center for Contemporary Critical Thought (and to the reading group that will be organized at the Columbia Global Centers in Paris) during the academic year 2017-2018. The goal will be to begin to engage a multidisciplinary and polyphonic conversation at the intersection of philosophy, of political science and law, of legal history and the social sciences and humanities, on the concept and on the practices of revolution and social change, or more broadly on the different forms that critique and political resistance can take and have taken in the contemporary world.

Private actors in politics and policy-making

Trespassers producing norms?

At a time when a growing literature documents a rising involvement of private actors such as business associations, professional associations, multinational corporations or law firms in the creation of public policy, it seems crucial to study the practices of this involvement, as well as to study the meaning of such developments for the very distinction that social sciences have been making between the private and the public spheres, the private and the public actors. In other words, how do the concrete modalities of this involvement reshape the definition of roles and statuses of private and public actors in politics and policy?

The Democratic State in Trans-Atlantic Context

Scholarship on the state has been oddly parochial, focused on the domestic and national scales to the exclusion of the international and transnational. This habit of presuming the nation-state as a bounded container is particularly entrenched in work on the state, understood in Weberian terms that are conceptually insulated from democratic practices. Democracy, in turn, is often taken as an already defined category of regime rather than a quality of political action as it plays out in state-building. By taking both democracy and the nation-state for granted, scholars leave unspecified what should be empirically explained. Even comparative analyses of welfare states, which should be more cosmopolitan, tend to reify national differences by naturalizing the comparative framework rather than by historicizing the mutual constitution of systems of social provision. During this conference, we hope to advance a transnational conversation with scholars from the U.S. and Europe to interrogate the development of the democratic state in trans-Atlantic context.

Despite the existence of widespread public discourse about equality and human rights, social, racial, sexual, ethnic, religious, political and economic divisions continue to mark societies across the globe. In many countries, these divisions have even widened under the pressure of competing nationalist and populist discourses which highlight difference rather than common humanity. Today, new technologies of surveillance are used on both a national and supra-national level to classify, segregate and control all those who are thought to threaten the mythical cohesion and security of nation-states. Whilst it was thought that the end of the Cold War and the spread of globalisation would lead to the erosion of boundaries of all kinds, on the contrary old boundaries are being rebuilt and new ones created. These boundaries have spread far beyond the traditional borders of nation state as surveillance and security have come to dominate the agendas of international organisations.

Les communications devront s’inscrire dans trois axes principaux de réflexion. L’un porte sur la construction et la mise en œuvre de dispositifs de formation dans lesquels les enjeux de la syndicalisation, et plus largement de la diversification des publics-cible du syndicalisme, sont posés. Le second interroge les usages individuels et collectifs qui peuvent être faits de ces formations. Le troisième oriente le regard sur la circulation des savoirs entre les organisations syndicales et d’autres champs de réflexion sur le salariat, le travail et les relations professionnelles. Le champ juridique européen

Au cours des vingt dernières années, un grand nombre d’ouvrages ont envoyé l’Europe du droit. La plupart ont envisagé les rapports entre la Cour de justice de Luxembourg et ses divers relais économiques et sociaux. Ce récit judiciaro-centré sous-estime néanmoins la variété des « fonctions » qui ont été attribuées au droit et aux juristes dans la construction d’un ordre politique communautaire. L’objet de cette conférence réunissant à l'Institut universitaire européen (Florence) sociologues, politistes, historiens et juristes est de rouvrir ce dossier en croisant une sociologie des élites européennes (milieux juridiques européens mais formation et capital juridique des élites européennes) et une analyse des conflits entre savoirs et savoir-faire (économique, juridique, bureaucratique, etc) du gouvernement de l'Europe.

Journée d'étude Vox Internet II

Réunion d'ICANN à Paris, lancement des Assises du numérique, l'internet et sa gouvernance sont fin juin sous les feux de l'actualité . Mais malgré le SMSI, l'objectif d'une gouvernance "transparente, multilatérale et démocratique" est confronté au statu quo. Le projet de recherche Vox Internet voudrait proposer un autre cadre d'analyse que la gouvernance procédurale pour aborder les promesses et limites de la participation de la société civile et celles de l'internet du futur. Une journée d'étude publique, organisée autour de quatre communications innovantes, vise à ouvrir des pistes pour la recherche et le débat.
