The “Arctic Week” is a one-week international conference that provides transdisciplinary approaches to climate and environmental changes in the Arctic. The Third international conference of young urban researchers (TICYURB) is a collaborative effort of the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL), the Research Center on Socioeconomic Change and Territory (DINAMIA’CET-IUL), the Interdisciplinar Center of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), the Institute of Sociology – University of Porto (ISUP) and the School of Architecture of the University of Sheffield (SSoA). We encourage the submission of theoretical and empirical works about these topics. TICYUrb wish to act as a bridge between social, human, natural and all other scientific domains, so every paper will be welcomed and accepted for consideration.

Schengen: people, borders and mobility
In the era of globalization, which benefits the implementation of policies of both stimulus or repression for the movement of people, academics have been fostering discussion around topics and concepts related with migration, borders and mobility. This epistemological basis enables us to apprehend the complexity of the European area and invites us to examine the boundaries or lack of it that separate territories. The conference also seeks to analyze the changes in the concepts of border and border control; to understand how residents in the Schengen Area – “native” or immigrants – build their national and transnational identity; to assess the evolution of mobility within the Schengen Area, which in turn allows us to perceive the relations between regions, states and individuals and to explain the various impacts of the Schengen agreements in the territories, people and societies and their border experiences.

Annual International Conference / Sciences Po Paris / May 19th and 20th 2014
The conference seeks to create a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue between students coming from European and foreign universities. The project was initially driven by the feeling that legal scholarship has remained largely silent in the aftermath of the economic crisis, especially concerning the role of lawyers and legal templates. Another underlying impetus is the concern over the relative absence of European legal scholarship in debates concerning cutting-edge global governance issues. The challenge is to explore how European legal thought can help to understand problems brought about by globalization.This year the conference will be held in Sciences Po Paris on May 19th and 20th 2014.

The 2-day International Conference "Policing Empires: Social Control, Political Transition, (Post-)Colonial Legacies", to be held in Brussels in December 2013, will be the last in a series of events convened by the GERN Working Group on (Post-)Colonial Policing. Building on previous explorations of policing, surveillance and security experiences in colonial contexts, the aim of this final conference is to promote a multi-sited and comparative approach to colonial policing practices and their legacies in the postcolonial world.

Globalization and its “sources”: towards a reflexive approach.
Thématique émergente des sciences humaines et sociales il y a encore une vingtaine d’années, la mondialisation est devenue une interrogation majeure de l'ensemble de leurs disciplines. Question à la fois récente et transversale, son étude a ainsi donné lieu à une pluralité d’approches, car ce sont des disciplines anciennement constituées qui en ont pris en charge l'analyse, chacune privilégiant ses méthodes, ses questionnements, ses niveaux de compréhension, etc. Économistes, sociologues, anthropologues ou historiens ont ainsi découpé « l'objet mondialisation » selon les catégories que leur fournissait l'histoire de leurs disciplines. Cette diffraction se complexifie, par ailleurs, si l'on met en regard différents champs scientifiques nationaux : l'analyse de la mondialisation y est non seulement menée par des disciplines aux traditions différentes, mais aussi en fonction des principes propres qui structurent chaque espace national. -

La rencontre de 2009 entend se concentrer sur les progrès réalisés dans les divers domaines – méthodologiques, épistémologiques et conceptuels – de recherche en sémiotique juridique. La table ronde souhaite, notamment, explorer les conséquences des thèmes suivants : « Transparence, contrôle et pouvoir » sous une perspective sémiotique ainsi que les approches émergeantes et prometteuses qui peuvent être utilisées dans la recherche et l'interprétation du droit et des phénomènes juridiques. Le but principal de cette rencontre est d'examiner les défis épistémologiques et méthodologiques auxquels « transparence, contrôle et pouvoir » fait face aujourd'hui et d'en considérer les effets.
