    Study days - Representation

    The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference

The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

    Conference, symposium - Europe

Paradigms, models, scenarios and practices in terms of strong sustainability

While the notion of sustainability continues to be associated with the Brundtland Report (1987) and the concept of sustainable development, a community of sustainability researchers and practitioners increasingly seeks to emancipate the concept to be consistent with the knowledge and aspirations of the moment. The enthusiasm and expectations for more sustainability go beyond mere environmental issues. They touch on crucial social issues as well. The symposium papers intends to question the paradigms, models, scenarios and practices that embody sustainability. One may wonder what meaning should be given to the very idea of sustainability and the representations it conveys.

DARIAH Annual Event 2019: Humanities Data

The DARIAH Annual Event 2019 thematizes a catalogue of research questions that arise when we speak of Humanities Data. At the very heart of this topic linger questions around the type and amount of data that humanists collect: what kind of data do we have; where is it; and who owns it? Is our data indeed complex, and if so, what makes it complex? How do definitions and conceptualisations of the term ‘data’ resonate with or, perhaps more accurately, alienate us from our conceptions of our source landscape as art and humanities scholars? And, of course, how will the major European policy initiative to build an Open Science Cloud for research data impact upon our practices and opportunities? The upcoming DARIAH Annual Event 2019 combines forms of encounter developed in prior meetings, such as Working Groups meetings, workshops organised by Working Groups and projects, and a Marketplace to exchange ideas around new research projects and infrastructural solutions with an open conference setting.

The combined histories of colonialism, extraction industries, energy, as well as innovation in design, architecture, literature and technology offer a lens by which to examine how contemporary techno-scientific societies envision planetary futures. Site visits exploring resource extraction, colonialism in urban policy and planning, and speculative architectural design will be accompanied by an analysis of science fiction, science technology, speculative design and ethnography, as well as life and earth sciences.

This "Le Studium® Conference" aims to look at co-housing initiatives in the perspective of sustainable spatial development. Its purpose is both to take stock of ongoing research and practices, as well as to set a research agenda and establish future collaborations.
