  Políticas e geopolíticas de tradução

  Circulação multilingue do conhecimento e histórias transnacionais da geografia

  Nos últimos cinquenta anos, de modo geral o campo da história da geografia têm operado a passagem de uma abordagem centrada nas Escolas Nacionais em prol da circulação do conhecimento em suas múltiplas escalas. Consequentemente, o léxico da história das ciências e da geografia vem sendo progressivamente povoado por conceitos como trânsito, redes, mobilidades, transnacional, circulação, transferência, centrais de cálculo, espaços do conhecimento, geografias da ciência, mobilidade espacial do conhecimento, geografias da leitura e geografias do livro. Mais recentemente, tem surgido um movimento que considera a necessidade de descolonizar a própria história da geografia, tornando este campo um dos mais dinâmicos da disciplina. Entretanto, mesmo no interior desse quadro, temas como línguas, traduções e escrita não têm recebido a mesma atenção em comparação a museus, laboratórios, jardins botânicos e sociedades científicas, por exemplo. Ao recorrermos às recentes perspectivas abertas pelo domínio dos translation studies, constatamos que as Ciências Humanas têm negligenciado o alcance e a relevância do papel das traduções.

  ReThinking Europe in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region

  The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies

  Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union?   Mixed arbitral tribunals, 1919–1930

  An experiment in the international adjudication of private rights

  The creation of a system of Mixed Arbitral Tribunals (MATs) was a major contribution of the post-WWI peace treaties to the development of international adjudication. Numerically speaking, the 36 MATs were undoubtedly the busiest international courts of the interwar period. Taken together, they decided on more than 70,000 cases, mostly covering private rights. The MATs are similarly remarkable from a procedural point of view. First, their respective rules of procedure were so detailed that contemporaries described them as 'miniature civil procedure codes'. Second, in a departure from most other international courts and tribunals, they also allowed individuals whose rights were at stake to become involved in the proceedings before them.

  Poder e mídias, poder das mídias

  Olhares sobre as Américas

  Para seu numero 11, RITA se propõe de interrogar na sua seção Thema os vínculos entre poder e mídias nas Américas. Diferentes orientações podem ser evocadas, sem ser exclusivas. Artigos que tratarão da analise critica das mídias oficiais ou artigos sobre as mídias de oposição, em contextos históricos e geográficos variados, estão benvindos. Outras contribuições poderiam se interessar pelos efeitos das diferentes formas de tratamento mediático reservadas aos movimentos populares. Análises criticas sobre as relações entre mídias e poderes econômicos são também esperadas. O dossiê temático poderá também integrar reflexões sobre a recente diversificação das mídias de informação, tratando por exemplo do aparecimento de mídias “alternativas” na Internet ou do poder das fake news na construção das representações coletivas.

  Politics of epistemic vulnerability in the nuclear age

  Nuclear choices commit populations and societies for at least decades and can cause large scale damage in a very short period of time. How is the scope of available nuclear choices decided then? When it comes to weapons, direct experience cannot be the answer as no one can rely on personal experience of nuclear war. Most decision-makers no longer even have the experience of the effects of such weapons either given that North Korea has been the only country testing nuclear weapons since 1998. The populations’ wishes do not qualify either, since they are very rarely consulted and only few studies on those attitudes exist.Therefore this multi-year seminar investigates the grounds on which the scope of publicly acceptable nuclear choices have been based since the end of nuclear testing.

  Les relations Europe-Arabie (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

  Ce colloque international s’intéressera aux liens entre l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l’époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l’âge industriel jusqu’aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l’étude du contenu et de l’évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique. Pour étudier à la fois le contenu des échanges et leur évolution, deux axes seront privilégiés : les relations culturelles et scientifiques en lien avec l’évolution des regards mutuels du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle ; l’évolution des relations économiques du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle.

  Post, counter or simply hegemony?

  Political thought and International Relations 30 years after “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy”

  In 2015, 30 years will have passed since the publication of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy”. Since its first appearance, this text has become a reference point for theoretical reflection in the Social Sciences ― particularly for left leaning academics―, for its revival of theoretical debate around the notion of hegemony. Gramscian, poststructuralist and deconstructionist influences are intertwined in the theoretical political proposal of these authors. They attempt to move beyond classic Marxism, and class reductionism, to formulate an alternative to the neoliberal paradigm. Agonism and radical democracy are the principal theoretical and practical innovations emerging thanks to the work of these authors.

  Common Experiences, Common Desires ? Tracing an Intellectual History between China and Africa

  Conférence ANR Espaces de la culture chinoise en Afrique (EsCA)

  In his 1954 presentation to dignitaries from across Asia and Africa, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai acknowledged the differences between the two cultural spheres; nevertheless, Zhou stressed, a more important factor in all future relations should be the “common experiences and desires” of people from across the two continents to create a new world from the ashes of war and colonialism. Building on Zhou’s insight into commonalities of experience, this presentation will trace the cultural intersections that have existed between China and African since the 1920s.

  L'axe de recherche « Nation et mondialisation » a notamment privilégié un programme pluridisciplinaire relatif à l’analyse des élites. D’un point de vue politologique, il concerne l’analyse comparative des représentants politiques au sein des démocraties européennes et d’autre part celle de la symbolique, appréhendée notamment du point de vue des rituels politiques. Dans une perspective davantage sociologique, il ambitionne de favoriser le développement d’études comparatives autour de la question de la distinction élitiste, y compris avec le concours d’historiens ou d’anthropologues susceptibles d’introduire, pertinemment, des dimensions temporelles et culturelles.

  Créé en 2008, le Groupe d'histoire des organisations internationales rassemble des spécialistes en sciences sociales et des archivistes travaillant dans des organisations internationales. En ce sens, il constitue un forum unique au monde de rencontres et de discussions sur l'histoire de ces organismes internationaux et sur la question des sources d'archives en leur possession. Pour l'année académique 2009-2010, le Groupe d'histoire des organisations internationales organise une série de conférences où seront traitées différentes thématiques en lien avec l'histoire et les activités des organisations internationales. Ces conférences sont ouvertes à toute personne intéressée.
