It centers on material culture in Antiquity and the Middle Ages through the exploration of instances of objects, especially objects placed in association, and their materiality,  expressivity and connectivity in a variety of media.

  PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments.   Rethinking tobacco history: Commodities, empire and agency in global perspective, 1780–1960

  Tobacco was one of the most important globally traded commodities from the 17th century through to the present day, and yet it has received relatively little attention in the historiography of modern empires in comparison to other commodities, such as sugar or cotton. As a result, recent approaches to rewriting the history of European imperialism from a more global perspective have hardly been problematized with regard to the peculiarities of tobacco history. Nowadays, studies no longer understand empire as a rigid relationship between metropole and colonies, but take the dynamics of actors within an empire as seriously as the networks and global processes that crossed imperial borders, or indeed lay beyond them. The conference starts from this assumption.

  North American Interiors at the Turn of the Twentieth Century: Beyond Historicism and the Arts and Crafts

  In a series of articles from the early 1900s, American Architect and Buildings News, Architectural Record, and The Artist introduced their readers to a recent development in Europe: the emergence of a “so-called ‘new art’” – Art Nouveau – in design, its products ranging from buildings to decorative objects. Though the origins, formal characteristics, and future direction of the "new art" were ambiguous, it represented a deliberate effort to break with historicist conventions in design. The periodicals described developments overseas which did not generally affect North American practice. Historicism, whether in the form of the Beaux-Arts, the Colonial Revival or other revivals, and the Arts and Crafts remained dominant in upper-class interiors. The purpose of this session is to examine exceptions to these general trends – commissions, clients, decorators, artists, architects, networks and exchanges with the contemporary European developments or traditions outside Europe, with areas of influence outside the prevalent sources of design.

  French Historical Studies (Special Issue)

  L’histoire de la musique a généralement été étudiée comme une catégorie à part. Elle n’a pas suscité le même intérêt parmi les historien(ne)s que d’autres objets culturels tels que les films ou la littérature. L’historiographie la plus récente éclaire la place de la musique dans la société française et suggère qu’il reste encore beaucoup à faire pour constituer un ensemble de connaissances historiques sur son rôle dans l’histoire. Ce numéro spécial de FHS voudrait faire le bilan de nos savoirs et les orienter vers des pistes de recherche nouvelles. Qu’est-ce que la production et la consommation de la musique nous disent de la nature évolutive de l’identité française et des relations entre ses divers constituants ?

  Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge

  This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

  Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

  Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

  The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

  The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a Conference entitled “The Islamic Legacy in the 20th and 21st Centuries”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within the this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.   The exit from war in Danubian Europe: a new era? (1918-1924)

  Using the Hungarian case as a springboard, and broadening the perspective to the whole of Danubian Europe, the conference seeks to address the following questions: the new social bonds emerging from the transformation brought about by the Paris Peace Conference; social, intellectual and (or) regional impact of changes, conflicts and international confrontations between 1918 and 1924. The conference aims to rise to the challenge of writing comparative social histories of this historical moment.

  Music and Political Democratisation in Late Twentieth Century

  This event aims to innovatively question how musical practices formed ways of imagining democracy in the democratic transitions that took place after Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’ in 1974 – what Huntington (1991) called the ‘third wave’ of democratisation, which involves more than 60 countries throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Rather than studying music’s diverse deployments within these political contexts (music ‘in’ transitions to democracy), these study days place the emphasis upon ways in which music embodies democratisation processes and participates in the wider social struggle to define freedom and equality for the post-authoritarian era (hence the ‘and’ in the title of the event).
