First international congress for young researchers in Middle Ages
On 08, 09 and 10 November 2018, the 1st International Congress of Young Researchers in Middle Ages (ICYRMA) will take place at the University of Évora, Portugal. ICYRMA is destinated to students at master, doctoral and postdoctoral level and/or to those who have obtained their academic degrees in the last five years. It aims to be an interdisciplinary space for dissemination, discussion and contact among young researchers who study the Middle Ages from various perspectives: history, archeology, art history, literature, philosophy, philology, anthropology, methodology, among other areas.

Third international conference of young urban researchers (TICYUrb)
The Third international conference of young urban researchers (TICYURB) is a collaborative effort of the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL), the Research Center on Socioeconomic Change and Territory (DINAMIA’CET-IUL), the Interdisciplinar Center of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), the Institute of Sociology – University of Porto (ISUP) and the School of Architecture of the University of Sheffield (SSoA). We encourage the submission of theoretical and empirical works about these topics. TICYUrb wish to act as a bridge between social, human, natural and all other scientific domains, so every paper will be welcomed and accepted for consideration.

Repenser le Halal : généalogie, tendance actuelle et nouvelle interprétation
The issue of halal sprang up in the early 1980s, but only in the past 10 years has it become a salient concern, especially in Europe and Asiatic non-Muslim countries, mainly for business purposes and other economic activities. Since then, halal has progressively encompassed all aspects of modern human life, including halal food-processing, halal hotel, halal sauna, halal cosmetics, halal drugs, halal fashion, halal taxi, halal airline, etc. From this halal phenomenon, many new things arose: halal certificate bodies (HCB), Islamic marketing, Islamic finance, and the like. Accordingly, halal has been continuously normalized and standardized by modern rationality that has turned it into a practice and policy for regulating Muslims in their whole daily life. These new practices in economy progressively required new kinds of scholars (‘ulama) committees to deal with new discoveries in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, in order to issue fatwas on such issues, which did not exist or were different in the past within classical-fiqh discussion.

Indonesian Exceptionalism: Values and Morals of the Middle Ground
‘Exceptionalism’ is a borrowed political term that implies that a country or entity is somehow special. Indonesia is not small. Indonesia is not poor in cultures, religions, society, or ethnic groups. Indonesia is not unimportant economically, regionally, or politically. Historically, Indonesia has always been an exceptional place. Indonesia as ‘imagined community’ continues to be an ongoing process. Various questions that can be raised include: What are relevant Indonesian values and morals for maintaining Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global world? What is religion’s contribution to forming agreed values and ethics? To what extent is there an Indonesian contribution in balancing Islamic values and democratic practices? How do religious values impact the ethics of state governance?

Like other regions of the world, South-East Asia has, since the mid-1980s, seen the rise of a new “spirit of capitalism”, linked to the growth of a middle class. Various religious mass-organizations have developed new discourses on wealth and innovative techniques of financing. At their helm, we often find charismatic figures who are responding to the demands of those in search of meaning in an increasingly de-structured modern urban life setting. In doing so, these actors operate on a “spiritual marketplace” characterized by great fluidity and competition. This conference is to look at the different ways through which tensions between religious ethics and economic rationalization are negotiated, both ideologically and institutionally.

Risk, Dignity and Fragility: Searching for a New Ethics
Research Program on Lost Virtues, Found Vices, 1st International Symposium
This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the nature and structure of an ethics for the 21st century. Ethics has most often been founded on a concept of the self as an agent that is secure, self-confident, and in control and on a view of the world as stable, unchanging and thus as knowable and predictable. Yet contemporary culture shows us a very different view of ourselves and of our environment. Caught up in a world in constant change where borders and boundaries, conditions and contexts are constantly changing and uncertainty is the norm, we find ourselves insecure, vulnerable as forces beyond our control direct and frame the moral decisions that we face. How must ethics be reconceived in light of our shifting ideals of the self and the world? Can there be an ethics under the conditions of uncertainty, flux, and instability?

Normativités islamiques, mondialisation et sécularisation
L’étude des dynamiques normatives islamiques sera au cœur de ce colloque qui s’intéressera aux processus de qualification / déqualification « halal » dans tous les domaines : comment et par qui, à l’intention de qui, en vertu de quoi, les objets, discours, pratiques peuvent-ils être ou sont-ils qualifiés de « halal » / « haram ». Quels sont les modes, institutions, argumentaires de légitimation / délégitimation islamiques ? Quelles sont les procédures de contrôle de conformité de la norme et comment et par qui sont-elles élaborées voire institutionnalisées ? L’appel à contributions s’adresse aux disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales, notamment l’histoire, l’anthropologie, la sociologie, le droit, les sciences politiques, la philosophie etc. Les contributions devront être étayées empiriquement, elles expliciteront leurs démarches méthodologiques, sources, bibliographies. -

An Historical Perspective
While contemporary grumblings about hospital food have become the quintessential hospital complaint, it is undeniable that a clean, warm bed, rest and the provision of food and drink, rather than medicines and therapies have always greatly increased hospital patients’ chances of recovery. Indeed diet has from the time of Galen been a central part of medical therapy. However, even if central to the day-to-day routine of hospitals, workhouses and asylums, food and drink continue to be overlooked in historical accounts of hospitalisation. This conference aims to foreground the role of food and drink in health care institutions in the past. -

Religion et économie dans un monde globalisé
Le congrès de la Société internationale de sociologie des religions (SISR), organisé par l’Institut d’études politiques d’Aix-en-Provence, réunira quatre cent participants à l’occasion d’une quarantaine de sessions thématiques pour interroger les relations entre religion et économie. Au-delà même de l’occasion conjoncturelle, il est indéniable que les croyances et appartenances religieuses permettent de mieux appréhender les comportements économiques. La variable économique est tout aussi pertinente en amont : le niveau de vie, qu’il soit individuel, relatif à des groupes d’individus ou encore à une société entière, s’avère déterminant dans le choix d’une adhésion religieuse spécifique. -

Research in Economic Anthropology (REA), published by Emerald Press, is a peer-reviewed book series dedicated to the anthropological – including archaeological – investigation of economy and society. It has been in publication since 1978. Anthropological papers addressing the economics of religion in religious beliefs, behaviour, practices, organisations, or institutional dynamics are being sought for Volume 30 of REA.
