Maternal Sacrifice in Jewish Culture
Rethinking Sacrifice from a Maternal Perspective in Religion, Art, and Culture
Rethinking Nancy Jay’s opposition between sacrifice and childbirth in what she defines a “remedy for having been born of woman”, the conference aims to explore new approaches to the maternal sacrifice as a ritual, as a narrative, and as a metaphor in the context of Jewish culture.

Materialities and devotion (5th-15th centuries)
V Medieval Europe in motion

Maternal Sacrifice in Jewish Culture
Rethinking Sacrifice from a Maternal Perspective in Religion, Art, and Culture
The phrase “maternal sacrifice” combines two complex terms entangled in an even more complex dynamic. First of all, “sacrifice”, a word whose definitions have been considered inadequate to describe the multiformity of practices and meanings it evokes as a ritual, as a narrative, and as a metaphor. James Watts distinguishes between “narrative traditions about killing people”, oriented towards an evaluation of killing and murder, and “the ritual killing of animals”, focused on the social functions of ritual and religion (Watts 2011, 8). To those categories a third level can be added that is related to the metaphorical use of the notion of sacrifice as the act of giving up something in order to attain a higher goal.

Gesture and Belief: routes, transfers and intermediality
In the last decades, the body’s role and its agency have gained new centrality in the analysis of the religious experience. Through its connection with materiality, the religious expression surpasses the spiritual to be understood as a chain of relationships and encounters between bodies, objects and sensory stimuli. Accordingly, under the premise of “routes, transfers and intermediality”, this event seeks innovative readings on subjects that discuss, question and rethink dynamics of circulation, transmission and alterity, through an exchange of ideas and objects of study, which crosses borders and disciplines.

It is organised as part of the IRC-funded project “Spiritual Infrastructure, Space and Society: The Augustinian Friars in Late Medieval Ireland”. The Regional and Transregional in Romanesque Art and Architecture
The categorization of Romanesque by region was a cornerstone of 20th-century scholarship, and the subject is ripe for reappraisal, particularly in relation to transregional and pan-European artistic styles and approaches. In addition to a review of the historiography of the subject, individual papers are concerned with the strength, durability, mutability and geographical scope of regional styles, the extent to which media are important, the assumption and transmission of forms and motifs, the conditions that give rise to the development of transregional styles and the agencies that cut across territorial boundaries.

1st International Workshop
Scientists of many different disciplines are involved in the study of relics and kindred artefacts, but till now there was no real forum for these people to exchange ideas and discuss methods. Therefore the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) is organizing a two-day workshop on the scientific study of relics. During this meeting we want to give analytical scientists, textile specialists, conservators, anthropologists, historical researchers, people involved in 3D reconstruction as well as radiocarbon dating specialists a forum to exchange ideas about relics.

Rethinking the Dialogue Between the Visual and the Textual
Methodological Approaches to the Relationships Between Religious Art and Literature (1400-1700)
In recent decades, the interactions between religious art(s) and literature(s) in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period have been an important area of study for many scholars. More particularly, the study of the interconnectedness of texts and images and of the contact zones between visual arts and literature constitutes an emerging field that is particularly stimulating for both art historians and historians of literature. These scholarly interests generate a range of general methodological and theoretical questions: how can a text be used to understand an image? How can an image help to discern the meaning of a text? How do we interpret texts and images together in order to understand the religious culture of these periods? How do we consider them in relation to each other, without underestimating the specificities of each medium? What are the purposes of the combined study of these sources?

The Face of the Dead and the Early Christian World
The theme chosen for this meeting is the study of funerary images in the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central question will a reflection on the function of the funerary images in a broad sense, but also their impact on the early christian world. The choice of the chronological time also shows the second intention of the colloquium: this is an attempt to explain why the ancient funerary tradition of the image will eventually disappear, replaced by other figures of the representative functions. Through various media - from the mosaic and painting, through sculpture and ending with gilded glasses - there will be presented one of the nodal representation of the self: the human face on the border between life and death. -

Seventh Day of Geography. Spaces of Death and the dead in spaces
For the seventh consecutive year, the association Doc'Géo organizes the Day of Geography on April 7th, 2009 (in partnership with the Ecole Doctorale Montaigne Humanité, MSHA and ADES UMR CNRS 5185). This Day may primarily interest Masters, Doctoral, Post -doc, and therefore young researchers. The objective of this day is to consider the spatial dimension of death, a theme to which far too little attention was paid in the humanities, thus offering potential rich thematic analysis. The purpose of this one day conference is to initiate, through a partnership between several disciplines (geography, sociology, ethnology, anthropology, history, art history, philosophy, medicine, biology, ethology ...) an analysis of the relation between space and death.
