European Space Agency's Space History Conference

There is more to space than rocket science. Historians, diplomats, economists, law students, political scientists and sociologists have all contributed to our understanding of the space age and its impact on our societies over the past decades. Sixty years on from the placing of the first human-made object in orbit around Earth, space is now an integral part of our daily lives. Space science and technology are projects for the whole of humankind, reaching not only outside Earth’s atmosphere, but also beyond our Solar System. While the technological and scientific challenges of working, living and travelling in space motivate students to pursue such studies, the impact of space activities on our lives on Earth, on relations between nations and organisations, and our collective recent history, provides fertile ground for students and scholars in the humanities to take up space-related subjects.

The 14-18 War in Africa - hidden memories

À travers la figure du général Tombeur, ce colloque met l’accent sur l’ensemble des acteurs belges et congolais qui ont été impliqués dans la première guerre mondiale. Mêlant des associations, des étudiants et des chercheurs, qu’ils soient belges ou congolais, ce colloque a pour volonté d’éclairer les mémoires de ces acteurs, des combats et des victoires, mémoires repliées, mais pas disparues. Mémoires qui donnent tout son sens à la mondialisation de cette guerre.

Resources and uses of archives of military justice

En Belgique, la justice militaire en temps de paix a été supprimée le premier janvier 2004. L’histoire de cette institution hybride, productrice d’une justice d’exception, a longtemps été négligée. Aujourd’hui, elle bénéficie d’un engouement nouveau. De belles séries d'archives (XIX^e et XX^e siècle), émanant des conseils de guerre, de la Cour militaire et de leurs auditorats, ont été inventoriées ces dernières années aux archives de l’État. Ces sources, qui ouvrent de riches perspectives de recherche, éclairent également un certain nombre de débats contemporains. La journée d’étude propose de réunir archivistes, chercheurs et public intéressé autour des ressources et usages des archives de la justice militaire. Elle ambitionne de faire le point sur les collections et les instruments disponibles et de mettre en lumière les recherches d’historiens et de juristes qui approfondissent les connaissances sur l’institution, ses acteurs et ses relations avec la population, tant en temps de paix qu’en temps de guerre, depuis 1830.

Gender and war, 20th century

Le mardi 12 novembre 2013, le Forum pour la recherche belge en histoire des femmes, du genre et de la sexualité organise sa rencontre annuelle autour du thème Genre et guerre, XX^e siècles. Au cours de deux sessions thématiques, des historien-ne-s de différentes institutions présenteront leurs recherches en mettant l’accent sur l’apport de la dimension de genre dans l’histoire des guerres, avec un focus sur la première guerre mondiale. La journée sera bilingue FR/NDL.

Dealer, collector, critic, publisher…: The « animateur d’art » and his multiples roles

Pluridisciplinary research of these disregarded cultural mediators of the 19th and 20th centuries

The first goal of our symposium is to enlighten the role of the animateur d’art in the development of the arts. We hope that this scientific gathering would help us specify this first formula of the cultural actor: “The animateur d’art is an amateur who actively participates in the defense of the arts and in the stimulation of the artistic creation in a certain period. He puts his numerous networks to work in order to spread ideologies and aesthetics through the cultural environment and the society. He is a key figure positioning himself as a mediator between the different art worlds – the plastic arts as well as between the different agents of the cultural environment. His work consists in building bridges between the artists and his own cultural environment in order to ease the reception of the works and to promote a peculiar aesthetics”.
