4 two-year fellowships for advanced studies - Turin humanities programme

Within the Turin humanities programme (THP), each year Fondazione 1563 will launch a call for applications to award 4 two-year post-doc fellowships open to Italian and foreign researchers, and will assign two Senior Fellowships to established academics invited to make their scientific contribution to the THP, appointed on the recommendation of the Scientific Committee and the Director of Studies.

The effects of World War I on the christian churches

11 November 1918 saw the end of the First World War, known at the time as the “Great War” (1914-1918) for its global scale, extreme destructivity and unseen casualty rates. On the one hand, wars evoke heroism and patriotism and bring people and groups to alter their mental boundaries and abilities. On the other hand, wars also elicit hatred, envy and violent behaviour, the settling of hidden accounts, the abandonment of ethical standards, and deep divisions and confrontations between families and societies. Since effects of the first world conflict were enormous and the shock waves were felt for years and generations to come, the question arises about the impact of the Great War on religion and the established churches.

Pour une nouvelle histoire transnationale de l’art (XVIII^e‐XIX^e siècles), organizzato dalla École française de Rome con il supporto della Bibliotheca Hertziana - Istituto Max Planck per la storia dell'arte. A un anno dall’inizio del programma di ricerca Lettres d’artiste, questo seminario si propone di fare il punto sulle ricerche in corso nel quadro del programma, analizzando i primi risultati e affrontando le questioni metodologiche ancora aperte circa il censimento, la schedatura, il trattamento informatico e l’analisi degli epistolari artistici tra Sette e Ottocento.

EAUH 2018 Rome – Urban renewal and resilience cities in comparative perspective

The session aims to explore the history of voluntary associations, focusing on the period between 1880 and 1940. It covers the role played by civic movements in the construction of a common consciousness based on identity and memorial dimension. Papers dealing with the following topics will be considered: The professional local elites; National and international associations as a place of civil society engagement; The local authorities.

Policing foreigners in European cities during the long eighteenth-century

Cette session accueille les propositions de communication qui s'intéressent à la manière dont les « étrangers » sont appréhendés par les polices urbaines en Europe, dans un XVIII^e siècle entendu largement, des années 1670-1680 aux premières décennies du XIX^e siècle. Les communications peuvent porter sur la définition des « étrangers » et leur statut, l'apparition de catégories nationales, les pratiques policières et les interactions entre police et étrangers dans l'espace urbain, les transformations policières face aux étrangers, les interactions entre les pratiques locales et les politiques nationales. Nous souhaitons encourager à l'occasion de cette rencontre les comparaisons européennes.

Metamorphosis: the landslide of identity

Dans le cadre du projet « À partir d'Ovide », l'association culturelle Rodopis organise un colloque titré Metamorfosi: identità in smottamento (Metamorphosis: the Landslide of Identity), qui aura lieu à Urbino (Italie) le 30 novembre et 1 décembre 2017. Le colloque se propose d'analyser dans une perspective multidiscliplinaire (la participation de sociologues, anthropologues, historiens, philosophes, experts de littératures anciennes et modernes est souhaitée) les problèmes posés par les notions d'indentité, alterité, transformation, soit à partir de l'examen de cas d'études, soit à partir d'une perspective epistémologique.

Archives from apostolic penitentiaries - their current condition and perspectives for the future

À l'occasion du cinquième anniversaire de l'ouverture aux chercheurs des séries consultables à l'Archivio della Penitenzieria Apostolica, une journée d'étude se tiendra le mardi 22 novembre 2016 au Palais de la Chancellerie, avec le patronage de l’École française de Rome et du Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom. Cette initiative a pour double objectif de dresser un bilan de ces cinq premières années et de suggérer des pistes de recherche pour l'avenir.

La storia ebraica costituisce un capitolo rilevante e particolarmente fecondo dell’attuale dibattito scientifico, sia sul versante storico-economico, che su quello antropologico, culturale e religioso. All’interno di un orizzonte di ricerca molto vasto, che identifica i Jewish studies come vero e proprio campo disciplinare, il convegno si propone di indagare, attraverso un’ottica comparativa, uno specifico argomento: le forme e le funzioni di utilizzo delle doti. L’istituzione dotale si configurava come uno degli elementi strategici nelle forme di organizzazione delle società ebraiche in Antico regime. Il suo studio ravvicinato e comparato consente, pertanto, di gettare una luce su molteplici aspetti.

Today’s Libya symbolizes the complexity of the transformations which have been modifying and reshaping the southern shore of the Mediterranean since 2011. The current Libyan transition, which is characterized by institutional fragility and has its own historical, political, and economic specificities is, however, part of major and wider dynamics of change that are related to more than a single Arabic country. The Conference therefore aims to discuss the process of Libyan transition from comparative perspectives.

They are a reflection on the value and the meaning of life, love and death. The International Conference “Etty Hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014)” (December 9-10, 2014, at Ca' Foscari University in Venice, Italy) aims to assess the works of this important witness from the 20th century.

Cette conférence internationale est consacrée à l'analyse des dimensions économiques et sociales du « Printemps arabe » et aux significations politiques multiples et plurielles que l'islam peut assumer. Par une approche d'économie politique seront analysées différentes manifestations du religieux dans la société, et diverses configurations sociales au-delà des considérations d'ordre sécuritaire, d'intégration ou de compatibilité entre l'islam et la démocratie. En adoptant une perspective comparative seront explorées, à partir de recherches de terrain en cours et aussi au-delà du monde arabe, des nouvelles façons d'interpréter les transformations politiques en cours et les multiples significations que l'islam peut avoir (et ne pas avoir).
