Organitechnosciences. Invective dynamics of a paradigm shift

Since the second half of the 20th century, a fundamental paradigm shift can be observed in the scientific discourses of various disciplines: The separation between the organic and the technical, which has shaped the "Western" history of ideas for centuries seems to have been abolished. This paradigm shift - from separation to hybridization - turns out to be a multifaceted process and becomes the scene of a contested terrain, also in literary studies. The discussion will focus on organic-technical figures of thought in German-language texts from the Middle Ages to contemporary literature.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era

International PhD Contract 2020-2023

Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Cette journée d'étude se donne pour but de considérer les stratégies mises en œuvre par la littérature de voyage entre les XVI^e et XIX^e siècles afin de représenter la figure de l'autre, qu'il s'agisse de stratégies textuelles ou visuelles. L’éloge se définit comme un discours épidictique né d’une vigoureuse admiration, impliquant une instance énonciative, productrice d’un discours évaluatif saturé d’amplification et de valorisation. L’éloquence de l’acte célébratif, éminemment rhétorique, établit ainsi la singularisation et l’élévation d’un objet, produisant un jugement mélioratif de l’objet visé. Omniprésent dans la poésie amoureuse et érotique (les odes et fragments saphiques, le cantique des cantiques biblique, la tradition du ghazal dans la poésie courtoise arabe et perse, les Amours et Odes ronsardiennes, L’union libre d’André Breton, l’hommage à la Femme noire de Léopold Sédar Senghor, The lesbian body de Monique Wittig se lisent comme autant de variantes encomiastiques), l’éloge a traditionnellement servi à chanter le féminin—geste qu’il s’agira d’interroger, tant sur le plan philosophique, énonciatif, rhétorique, genré qu'épistemologique.

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Translating E-Lit?

International Conference (Jan. 16 and 17, 2020, Paris 8 University, France)

The main focus of this conference will be translation as process, rather than as a mere product, which will prompt us to apprehend translated works as belonging to one or several networks, contexts and translational cultures. In short, translation is a concept that throws new light onto the exchanges and differences pertaining to contemporary digital literary culture. Contemporary digital literary culture mobilizes multiple operations: it involves translation across languages, but includes circulations characteristic of other translational issues at large: exchanges between interfaces, media, codes, institutions, cultural perspectives, artistic and archiving practices. In turn, digital forms of textuality share a certain number of aspects within ubiquitous environments, which means that translational processes will lead us to consider creative practices that stand beyond the traditional field of literature.

Meeting with the writer Pablo Landeo and the presentation of his Quechua language novel "Aqupampa"

L'association Amériques de l'INALCO en partenariat avec l'ambassade du Pérou en France proposent une rencontre avec l'écrivain Pablo Landeo Muñoz et la présentation de son roman en quechua Aqupampa. Carlos Amézaga, ministre conseiller à l’ambassade du Pérou, prononcera un discours d’ouverture. La présentation du roman sera faite par César Itier (INALCO). Elle sera suivie d’un dialogue avec l’auteur Pablo Landeo Muñoz et d’une lecture d’extraits du roman (surtitrés en français). Cette rencontre sera clôturée par un concert de musique andine proposé par le groupe Paris Andes.

16th annual symposium of the International Medieval Society – Paris

For its 16^th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

Medieval Textuality and its material display

The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

On Homophonic Translation

For the past fifty years, homophonic translation (traduction homophonique, sound translation, Oberflächenübersetzung) has been practiced internationally by an ever-increasing number of writers from the USA, the UK, Germany, France and beyond. Following pioneers such as Louis Zukofsky, Ernst Jandl and members of the Oulipo group, this heterodox genre (between translation and creation) has spread widely, to the point where it is among the exercises practiced in creative writing classes. Although some consider it as an unacceptable, illegitimate, and unethical practice, it is nonetheless true that such an approach to translation has acquired a crucial place within experimental writing, and notably in the poetic field.

Literature and Society in Central Asia

By focusing on the societal challenges reflected in Central Asian literary production, this workshop would like to bring answers, as well as new kinds of questions regarding the way the various societies and peoples of this geographic area have depicted their history throughout time. With the view of studying the way literature can be used as a source of historiography, and more generally speaking with the aim of assessing the interconnectedness of society and literature, the speakers will devote specific attention to the issue of the relationships between culture and power. In this regard the period covered extends from the 15^th century up to the 1990s, beginning with the end of the Medieval Times, when the "Timurid Renaissance" achieved the production of its finest hours of the on-going symbiosis of Turkic and Persian elements, and ending with the Perestroïka looked at from the point of view of Kyrgyz literature.

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Common Experiences, Common Desires ? Tracing an Intellectual History between China and Africa

In his 1954 presentation to dignitaries from across Asia and Africa, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai acknowledged the differences between the two cultural spheres; nevertheless, Zhou stressed, a more important factor in all future relations should be the “common experiences and desires” of people from across the two continents to create a new world from the ashes of war and colonialism. Building on Zhou’s insight into commonalities of experience, this presentation will trace the cultural intersections that have existed between China and African since the 1920s.

Law and Boundaries Conference

Annual International Conference / Sciences Po Paris / May 19th and 20th 2014

The conference seeks to create a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue between students coming from European and foreign universities. The project was initially driven by the feeling that legal scholarship has remained largely silent in the aftermath of the economic crisis, especially concerning the role of lawyers and legal templates. Another underlying impetus is the concern over the relative absence of European legal scholarship in debates concerning cutting-edge global governance issues. The challenge is to explore how European legal thought can help to understand problems brought about by globalization.This year the conference will be held in Sciences Po Paris on May 19th and 20th 2014.
