Delinquency, crimes and repression in History

The question of delinquency, in the most general sense of the term, is particularly complex because criminologists, sociologists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, doctors, lawyers, and historians who have studied this subject extensively have often expressed very different and even contradictory opinions. Difficulties arise as soon as the phenomenon is to be defined. In French law, the word “delinquency” designates all types of offenses. These fall into three categories: transgressions; which constitute very light offenses, crimes which are at an intermediate level, and crimes among including murders, non-premeditated voluntary homicides, and the assassinations, premeditated voluntary homicides. In recent years, in many countries, rape has entered this category of crimes. The Arabic language differentiates between delinquency (“inhiraf”) which designates minor crimes and the crime (“jarima”) which applies to the most serious crimes and offenses.

Wording urban diffusion

Drawing on different historical and geographical contexts, academic literature has produced since the 1960sa rich lexicon in various languages to analyse the global phenomenon of the territorial diffusion of urbanization. Just to mention a few: périurbain, sprawl (Gottman, 1967), suburbia (Fishman, 1987), desakota (McGee, 1989), exurbia (Nelson, 1992), Città diffusa (Indovina, 1990), post-suburbs (Phelps and Wu, 2011), Zwischenstadt (Sieverts, 2004). The reason of this prolific and bourgeoning literature in the field of urbanstudies is that the territorial diffusion of urbanization leads to reconsider the relationship between urbanismand territories. This workshop aims to examine this lexicon with the purpose of questioning the conceptual,disciplinary, and methodological frameworks that have oriented knowledge production on urbanization processesing different contexts and historical moments.

Municipalisation and urban management in Mozambique

Le Mozambique est encore très largement géré par l'administration de l'État central: il n'y a que 58 municipalités, toutes urbaines. La questionne est donc très politique, puisque toute avancée de la municipalisation permet à l'opposition d'acquérir plus de poids, même si le parti au pouvoir garde le contrôle sur la majorité d'entre elles. Ce colloque international aura lieu une dizaine de jours après la tenue des élections municipales d'octobre 2018, qui seront un test grandeur nature pour les élections présidentielles et législatives de l'année suivante...

ERC GeoDiverCity International Workshop

The ambition of the meeting is to engage discussion about fundamental questions regarding urban theories and modeling. Invited keynote speeches will be followed each by a roundtable of discussion. Related major results from the ERC will also be presented. The intention of the workshop is to summarize the state of knowledge and prepare an agenda for future research.Keynotes speeches will be delivered by Michael Storper, Michael Batty, Romain Reuillon, Elsa Arcaute, Marc Barthelemy and Fulong Wu. Distinguished scholars will comment their contributions and present their own vision about these questions.

Urban China and the challenges of sustainability

Medium conference

This is the second international event organised in the context of the Medium project. While research conducted in the context of the project focus primarily on the medium-sized cities Hangzhou, Zhuhai and Datong, the conference will consider urban China in its diversity, with a great variety of case studies including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin, the region of the Taihu lake etc. It will address the issue of sustainability from a broad perspective, tackling ageing housing, social inclusion, urban governance, environmental sustainability, participatory processes in urban planning, with a multi-disciplinary approach ranging from geography, political science, economy, sociology, computer science, environmental science, etc.

Living, Consuming and Action in Glocal Palestine

More often than not, Palestine, characterised by conflict, is analysed through the sole lenses of its political or cultural idiosyncrasy. Yet, new ways of living, consuming and acting that are embedded in the global reality, have emerged in the previous years and remained understudied. This global dimension may be understood as an imposed and inescapable reality, yet it is also adopted, integrated, amended and applied to a local dimension, so as to create a purely Palestinian form of it.This event will gather mostly researchers and PhD students in social sciences specialised in Palestine but will also pursue a comparative approach by resorting to other cases in the Middle East, North Africa or Europe. The conference also aims at confronting various approaches at the crossroads between art and science, research and action; it will create the frame for a dialogue between social sciences and the works of artists, architects as well as the new actions and philosophy of citizen and activist societies.

7th International PhD Seminar Urbanism and Urbanization

This 7th edition of the U&U International PhD Seminar will be held at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais, under the scientific direction of the Laboratory of Infrastructure and Architecture Planning (LIAT). Continually facing new demands from epistemological or technical society, and now facing an economic and social crisis (especially in Europe), urban planning is forced to question its methods. The Seminar is intended for PhD Students who wish to present their ongoing research questioning aspects of the field of urban planning in a historical perspective, from a theoretical point of view or with a potential for practical implementation. The U&U International PhD Seminars take place exclusively in English and seek to promote the exchange of ideas, provoke debate amongst researchers, invite comparisons, cross-pollinate different disciplines and to highlight the latest ongoing research. Les organisateurs de cette journée d’étude s'intéressent aux initiatives visant à introduire des projets innovants dans les villes, en particulier les villes ayant subi des transformations radicales ces vingt dernières années. Nous nous intéressons à des situations où les approches traditionnelles sont influencées par des stratégies nouvelles initiées par des groupes de pression composés d’architectes/designers, de groupes d’habitants ou des gouvernements locaux (municipalités ou autre). Cette journée d’étude souhaite explorer la question du recours à l’expertise des habitants ou des spécialistes du terrain dans le domaine de la rénovation urbaine : cette expertise est-elle intégrée dans des projets ? Comment ? Peut-elle servir à répondre au phénomène accru de fragmentation urbaine ?
