  The Chemical Industry in Northwest Europe: Local and Global Perspectives (18th–20th Centuries)

  The history of the chemical industry has long attracted scholarly attention and continues to do so today. This workshop reflects on the current state of the historiography, including its implications for other areas of research. Focusing on Northwest Europe and its connections to other regions, the workshop provides a forum to discuss works in progress and identify avenues for future research.   Moguls, Go-betweens and Smugglers: Film Distributors and their Networks during the Twentieth Century

  This workshop aims at revisiting the history of film importers/exporters and distributors throughout the 20^th century by examining the social inscription of their trade. Moguls, go-betweens and/or smugglers, film traders were main actors in determining the value of films, building film markets, bringing out audiences by giving them (or not) access to the films. Yet, the history of cinema has long ignored the figure of the distributor, too bland to obscure the ethereal figure of the author, too close to the limelight to interest those, less numerous, researching “those wonderful people out there in the dark,” the audience.

  Venice, a Mediterranean regional power

  Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669 – 1797

  The Mediterranean has always been at the heart of Venice’s interests during the Early Modern Period. A main source of its prosperity, the Inner Sea maintained its vital role even after the “northern invasions”, the battle of Lepanto and the “downturn” of the 17^th century. This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797.

  Paternalism Redeemed

  Old Ideals, New Realities

  Le paternalisme a longtemps souffert d'une très mauvaise réputation. Marqueur d'une hiérarchie sociale, morale ou politique devenue insupportable, il semblait avoir définitivement disparu (au moins dans ses formes instutionnelles) de nos sociétés libérales et démocratiques. Depuis une dizaine d'années, cependant, le monde universitaire (mais aussi politique) se passionne à nouveau pour sa dernière réincarnation, le paternalisme libertarian ou le « coup de pouce » (Nudges) défendu par l'économiste Richard Thaler et le jursite Cass Sunstein. L'objet de cette journée d'étude interdisciplinaire est de discuter de cette nouvelle légitimité et de s'interroger sur les évolutions théoriques ou sociétales qui pourraient expliquer cette évolution des modes de pensée.
