    Still on the Map!

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land

"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

The critic of automatic reason - stupidity and intelligence in the digitalisation of the world

Territorial fractures, ruptures, discontinuities and borders: issues for planners

The French-British Study Planning Group / Groupe franco-britannique de recherche en aménagement et urbanisme, has worked for 20 years on the building of networks and intellectual bridges between the communities of planning research and practice on both sides of the Channel. Since 2005 it has been formally constituted as a sub-group of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). The potential retreat of the current United Kingdom from the European Union presents a new context and it is natural that the group should turn its attention to the territorial impacts which could arise as a result. It is also an occasion to reflect more widely on all forms of territorial discontinuities, ruptures and borders, including those at the national, regional and local scales, and which are of concern to planning research and practice.

Paradigms, models, scenarios and practices in terms of strong sustainability

While the notion of sustainability continues to be associated with the Brundtland Report (1987) and the concept of sustainable development, a community of sustainability researchers and practitioners increasingly seeks to emancipate the concept to be consistent with the knowledge and aspirations of the moment. The enthusiasm and expectations for more sustainability go beyond mere environmental issues. They touch on crucial social issues as well. The symposium papers intends to question the paradigms, models, scenarios and practices that embody sustainability. One may wonder what meaning should be given to the very idea of sustainability and the representations it conveys.

Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities

Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes

The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban  territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

Regions and Regionalism in Canada: constructing and managing political, social and cultural territory

In a contemporary age in which “think globally, act locally” has become a slogan, has the propensity to favour local initiatives resulted in shifting loyalties, has it modified the level at which citizens feel their strongest sense of belonging? Has it altered conceptions of citizenship? Has it had any impact on the locus of power? Which conceptual tools are most pertinent when trying to apprehend the social, cultural and political dimensions of regions and regionalism in Canada? How has the territorial notion of “region”, which comes out of the European tradition, been articulated to adapt to the Canadian context, especially with regard to the question of belonging (communities, nations, etc)?

How sustainable are India’s Smart Cities?

Critically assessing the projects and politics underpinning the Smart City Mission

Following on a first meeting devoted to India’s Smart City Mission held in September 2018, the specific aim of this international workshop is to focus on issues of social and environmental sustainability. On the basis of field-based investigations, the presenters will critically assess the smart city experiments as they unfold. Among the questions to be discussed are the following: How does India’s engagement with smart cities compare with other international cases? To what extent do projects in India draw on cutting-edge technologies? How can we characterize the governance and politics of India’s engagement with ‘smart urbanism’?

How sustainable are India’s Smart Cities?

Critically assessing the projects and politics underpinning the Smart City Mission

Religious urbanisation and development in Africa

The volume will critically explore how processes related to religious urbanization intersect with different notions of development in African contexts. Cities are taken to be powerful venues for the creation and implementation of models of development whose moral, temporal, and political assumptions need to be examined, not least as they intersect with religious templates for the planning and reform of urban space.

Sociable spaces in the long Eighteenth Century (1650-1850) from present-day perspectives. Europe and its imperial worlds

This international conference will interrogate the evolution of the long eighteenth-century’s sociable spaces and their persistence in time. Analysing the interaction of sociability and space and the modes of construction of sociable spaces from the modern period to the present day will shed new light on the history of European and imperial societies. The eighteenth century in Europe saw the emergence of new forms of sociability and the creation of new places devoted to sociable practices. By deeply transforming urban centres and by structuring people’s social relationships, those sociable practices became increasingly identified with their spatial features.

    Wording urban diffusion

Drawing on different historical and geographical contexts, academic literature has produced since the 1960sa rich lexicon in various languages to analyse the global phenomenon of the territorial diffusion of urbanization. Just to mention a few: périurbain, sprawl (Gottman, 1967), suburbia (Fishman, 1987), desakota (McGee, 1989), exurbia (Nelson, 1992), Città diffusa (Indovina, 1990), post-suburbs (Phelps and Wu, 2011), Zwischenstadt (Sieverts, 2004). The reason of this prolific and bourgeoning literature in the field of urbanstudies is that the territorial diffusion of urbanization leads to reconsider the relationship between urbanismand territories. This workshop aims to examine this lexicon with the purpose of questioning the conceptual, disciplinary, and methodological frameworks that have oriented knowledge production on urbanization processesing different contexts and historical moments.

Municipalisation and urban management in Mozambique

Writing the city [into the urban]

In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies
