This dossier invites researchers to submit papers discussing the theoretical and methodological challenges and limits facing new research questions in order to address the interfaces between religion and gender in Latin American countries in light of changes in the social and religious field in recent decades. We welcome works produced from different areas of knowledge in the social and human sciences, as well as areas and studies at the intersection of these issues. We set out to encourage reflection on the ethical challenges faced by researchers regarding the new theoretical and methodological models used in our region and beyond.

The Symposium will thus offer an excellent opportunity to question the concept of sustainability at the crossroads of our various disciplines and practices, in order to better understand and master the way it affects environmental research lato sensu. 1956-1958: A revolutionary period that changed Africa (and the world)

The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

Desired Identities

New Technology-based Metamorphosis in Japan

In Japan, characters now invade social networks up to the point where a whole industry of character-camouflage is prompting millions of web users to merge with videogames-like creatures. How can we understand this phenomenon? What social changes does it contribute to shape and to mirror?During the course of an international workshop, researchers from various disciplines are invited to share their experiences and outcomes concerning this phenomenon, which has been stamped kyara-ka, “transforming into a character” (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007). It is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls “an emerging art of self–fashioning”. Based on elaborate techniques of disguises, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices. Exploring all the aspects of this “thingification of humans”, the workshop will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era

International PhD Contract 2020-2023

Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20^th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Image, Cinema & Politics: the Avant-Garde Dilemma in the Interwar Period (1918-1936)

In this publication we would like to explore the relation between the post-1918 crisis of the liberal system and the use of art and image as political media including its nationalist, gender and class discourses since they reflect the political and economic transformations of the post-war years. Art and cinema allow us to observe processes such as accelerated urbanisation, electrification and the automobile revolution, the incorporation of women into the waged- labour market or class struggles, all of which fed the insecurity and anxiety of industrialised societies which sought shelter in growing protectionism and corporatism.

L’espace centre-américain révèle constamment sa complexité, c’est pourquoi une première question guide la réflexion de cet appel, à savoir : de quelle manière et avec quels outils pouvons-nous penser les espaces centre-américains contemporains, leur histoire et leur configuration ? Michel Foucault se demande dans sa conférence « Des espaces autres » dans quelle mesure l’époque contemporaine serait probablement celle de l’espace à la différence du XIX^e siècle et son obsession avec le temps. Ce tournant géographique nous permet de penser les faits humains et sociaux à partir d’un endroit déterminé et par conséquent la façon dont cet espace est analysé, imaginé ou recréé.

Violence: An international journal

Violence: An international journal is launching a call for papers on the theme “Violence and environmental crisis”. Can we speak about violence when describing biodiversity loss, the destruction of natural sanctuaries like Amazonia and the Great Barrier Reef, or when observing the spillage of illegally polluting wastes? How long is the chain of violence related to environmental crisis? And who are the perpetrators and the victims of such violence? In which way can we speak about violence, and can this violence be legitimated or condemned? All this raises theoretical, normative, linguistic and empirical questions to be discussed in the articles fostered by this call.

The critic of automatic reason - stupidity and intelligence in the digitalisation of the world

Bêtise(s) et intelligence(s) de la numérisation du monde

En raison de l’épidémie actuelle de Covid-19, l'événement a été annulé et est en attente d'un report à une date ultérieure.

Ce colloque sera le moment de réfléchir à l’entrelacs entre différentes strates problématiques de la « numérisation du monde », sans négliger un élément central : toutes ces intelligences ont toujours besoin d’exister d’une manière ancrée, ce qui nous conduit à mettre en évidence le concept de territoire. Celui-ci ne sera pas entendu au sens simplement physique, mais aussi écologique, administratif, politique, éthique et existentiel, de l’ordre du milieu ou du transindividuel. L'évènement sera l'occasion d’explorer ces nouveaux territoires et leurs intelligences (à l’aide des outils de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme et du design) pour aller au-delà des smart territories, au sens plat et « bête » de déploiement massif de toutes sortes de devices numériques.

Exvoto. El voto como objeto: concepción, exposición, patrimonialización

Longtemps cantonnées à l’étude de ses formes picturales, les recherches sur l’ex-voto ont été renouvelées à l’aube du XXI^esiècle révélant dans le même mouvement la complexité de sa définition. Objet d’un vœu, objet d’une promesse, l’ex-voto se caractérise par sa variabilité formelle et usuelle, qui brouille son identification. Il est alors essentiel de se tourner vers les spécialistes de sa fabrication pour considérer les conditions de son élaboration dans une temporalité complexe qui va de l’imploration du divin au dépôt de la chose promise. Quelle que soit la religion au sein de laquelle il prend forme, l’ex-voto est replacé dans un lieu de culte, et la question de son exposition devient centrale. Objet connecteur entre le profane et le sacré, sa valeur se transforme au gré de ses circulations et selon le lieu où il est présenté. De son exhibition dévotionnelle à son exposition patrimoniale, l’ex-voto nous permettra de nous interroger lors de ce colloque sur les interrelations qu’il construit entre : religion et esthétique, dévotion et patrimonialisation, culture populaire et culture savante.

Diasporas, charity and the construction of belonging

A connected history of practices of ‘goodwill’ in Egypt during the imperial age (19th–20th centuries)

Egypt was a space of circulation in the 19th and 20th centuries; a pole of attraction for migrants from Europe and around the Mediterranean. Numerous individuals from Ottoman provinces choose it as a place of exile. Greeks, Italians and Maltese, to name the most numerous groups, swelled the ranks of populations of European origin, which was chiefly concentrated in urban centres. Numerous institutions and charities were created to support these mobile populations. A space of rivalry between different actors (consulates, associations, missionaries, philanthropists, etc), charity in the context of diaspora/diasporic communities/groups has not been sufficiently studied. Inspired by recent works in connected history, this workshop aims to approach charity from a relational perspective, through a comparison of the discourses on and the practices of ‘goodwill’ implemented by different groups.

Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries

Africa 2020

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?
