Miradas mexicanas sobre Francia y Estados Unidos (1821-1950)

¿Qué revelan sobre Ellos y Nosotros los epistolarios, diarios intimos, memorias y otros documentos olvidados?

El coloquio propone invertir la mirada para tratar de la visión compartida por los viajeros mexicanos sobre el otro mundo, Francia y Estados Unidos, países visitados por innumerables figuras políticas e intelectuales, además de testigos anónimos, desde la Independencia de México hasta mediados del siglo XX. Se tratará de descifrar aquellos testimonios mexicanos de naturaleza privada e íntima (epistolarios, memorias, diarios…) sin excluir las crónicas y documentos publicados en la prensa mexicana sobre los mundos francés y estadounidense entre 1821 y 1950.

Art history for artists: interactions between scholarly discourse and artistic practice in the 19th century

The conference seeks to examine the shaping of art history as a discipline during the 19^th century in relation to artistic training and exchanges between artists and scholars. The development of art history has been associated with an array of socio-political and economic factors such as the formation of a bourgeois public, the politics of national identity and state legitimacy or the needs of an expanding art market. This conference aspires to explore yet another, less studied dimension: the extent to which the historical study of art was also rooted in an intention to inform contemporary artistic production.

La marge et les historiens : de l’Amérique du Nord aux anciens empires

En s’intéressant aux « marges », les organisateurs engagent les participants à s’interroger sur les discussions actuelles à propos de l’écriture de l’histoire et ses représentations fictionnelles ou artistiques comme sur les rapports complexes entre histoire professionnelle et mémoires, entre histoire critique et mises en scène muséographiques et commémorations.

In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.
