  Textiles and Gender: Production to wardrobe from the Orient to the Mediterranean in Antiquity

  Textiles and gender intertwine on many levels, from the transformation of raw materials into fabric at one end, to dress and garments, and the construction of identity at the other. The conference will examine the gender division of work in the production of textiles, as well as attitudes to dress and gender across the Near East and Mediterranean culture in antiquity (c. 3000 BCE-300CE), tracing both cross-cultural and culturally specific associations.

  Ancient Greek and Roman painting and the Digital Humanities

  When in 1921, A. Reinach published the Recueil des textes grecs et latins relatifs à la peinture ancienne (Recueil Milliet), it was mainly to make accessible these texts about painting and aesthetics to a broader audience. Since two years, a team gathered around the Perseus Digital Library and the Perseids Project (Tufts University) seek to revitalize the Recueil Milliet (an essential tool for historians of Greek and Roman Art) implementing it into a digitalized format (http://digmill.perseids.org/commentary). In relation to the work made, the proposed conference seek to question methodologies which combine Digital Humanities and scientific research, especially in the field of history of Greek and Roman art. But also, to put forward the relationship between textual sources and the most recent archaeological findings.

  Musical narratives, performances, and reconstructions of the past (20th-21st centuries)

  The quest to reconstruct thestyles and histories of musical genres of the past is an old preoccupation. Since the 19^th century, the orientalist imaginary contributed considerably to the notion of the existence of "origin-musics". Whether "Pharaonic", "Arab", or "Hindu", a common reference to the past, seen as prestigious and immutable, contributed to the rationalization of musical knowledge on the basis of constructed connections. The orientalist period being relatively well documented, this workshop is more focused on ways of speaking of and describing the past over the course of the 20^th century and into the 21^st.

  On the dynamics of production (Distraction/Interference – Resistance/Accident)

  In ordinary terms, the word production refers to an act of creation and its result, or to a process at the end of which there is a materialisation of some kind, or to the act of making something present. By productively interfering with this common idea of productionwe would like to work towards establishing different ways of thinking about this concept.

  Distraction and Interference as well as Resistance and Accident are exemplary categories of the unexpected moments that may or may not take place in the course of production. They remind us that production cannot be reduced to the momentum of "achieving a product". Rather, these categories help to reveal the physical presence of those who produce, the materiality of the objects involved and the unforeseen effects of the "product". Furthermore, they allow us to question the alleged linearity of the processes that form part of production. Thereby, Distraction, Interference, Resistance and Accident make us aware to what extent production involves a "lived" and "living" tension between the producer and what is being produced, between the subject and the world.
