Représenter l’altérité : rencontres à travers l’espace et le temps (entre les XVIe et XIXe siècles)

Cette journée d'étude se donne pour but de considérer les stratégies mises en œuvre par la littérature de voyage entre les XVI^e et XIX^e siècles afin de représenter la figure de l'autre, qu'il s'agisse de stratégies textuelles ou visuelles. Tous les domaines linguistiques et culturels pourront être considérés afin de construire un tableau aussi large que possible de la manière dont l'autre est appréhendé par les récits des voyageurs à l'époque moderne.

Reason and rational modes of thought are often seen as the bastion against the acceleration of conflict into violence and the goal of the Enlightenment tradition was, in a large part, to liberate individuals from those irrational superstitions and beliefs which were at the base of these conflicts. However, many critiques of the Enlightenment project, both historical and more contemporary, see the imposition of universal reason as itself a form violence, ignoring claims of comprehensive traditions, identity and history on the individual. The aim of this special edition of the Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence is to examine possible counter-enlightenment approaches to violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History

2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network

The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

Pour une nouvelle histoire transnationale de l’art (XVIII^e‐XIX^e siècles), organizzato dalla École française de Rome con il supporto della Bibliotheca Hertziana - Istituto Max Planck per la storia dell'arte. A un anno dall’inizio del programma di ricerca Lettres d’artiste, questo seminario si propone di fare il punto sulle ricerche in corso nel quadro del programma, analizzando i primi risultati e affrontando le questioni metodologiche ancora aperte circa il censimento, la schedatura, il trattamento informatico e l’analisi degli epistolari artistici tra Sette e Ottocento.

Policing foreigners in European cities during the long eighteenth-century

Cette session accueille les propositions de communication qui s'intéressent à la manière dont les « étrangers » sont appréhendés par les polices urbaines en Europe, dans un XVIII^e siècle entendu largement, des années 1670-1680 aux premières décennies du XIX^e siècle. Les communications peuvent porter sur la définition des « étrangers » et leur statut, l'apparition de catégories nationales, les pratiques policières et les interactions entre police et étrangers dans l'espace urbain, les transformations policières face aux étrangers, les interactions entre les pratiques locales et les politiques nationales. Nous souhaitons encourager à l'occasion de cette rencontre les comparaisons européennes.

Les archives de la Pénitencerie apostolique: l’état actuel et les perspectives d’avenir

À l'occasion du cinquième anniversaire de l'ouverture aux chercheurs des séries consultables à l'Archivio della Penitenzieria Apostolica, une journée d'étude se tiendra le mardi 22 novembre 2016 au Palais de la Chancellerie, avec le patronage de l’École française de Rome et du Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom. Cette initiative a pour double objectif de dresser un bilan de ces cinq premières années et de suggérer des pistes de recherche pour l'avenir.

Captives, recruited, migrants: Empires and labor mobilization

From XVIIth century to present days

This workshop starts from the hypothesis that warfare and labor are strongly connected in Empire building and their evolution, to begin with war captives in early modern Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas and to continue with the various forms of recruitment in land and maritime empires in all those areas. Captives as well as local peasants were soldiers, seamen, and colonists at the same time. Forms of forced recruitment were still important in the XIX^th century (the press system in Britain and its variations in the Empire, recruitments in Russia) and continued in the XX^th century, in Europe during the wars, outside of Europe during and after colonization and decolonization up through nowadays children soldiers.

Le social avant la sociologie. Comment relire la pensée sociale du XIXe siècle

On situe communément l’avènement de la sociologie dans les dernières années du XIX^e siècle. Le cas français est particulièrement significatif, avec la publication en 1895 des Règles de la méthode sociologique d’Émile Durkheim. À tort ou à raison, le geste fondateur durkheimien, plus ou moins transposé dans les autres traditions intellectuelles nationales, a conduit à rejeter dans les ténèbres d’une « préhistoire » de la sociologie, la pensée sociale qui l’avait précédée sous des noms divers : science sociale, physiologie sociale, philosophie sociale, physique sociale, etc. L’objet de cet appel à contributions n’est pas de réhabiliter des traditions oubliées, de nier la rupture qui s’est opérée à la fin du XIX^e siècle ou de minorer l’importance de l’enquête dans l’investigation sociologique. Il est de réfléchir à la pertinence que peut avoir, pour le sociologue contemporain, la lecture des œuvres qui précèdent le moment conventionnellement admis de la naissance de la sociologie.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)

Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine

Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.

A third phase in historical and anthropological research on family? Towards a regional and dynamic typology

Dans le chantier interdisciplinaire consacré à l’étude de l’histoire de la famille et de la parenté en Europe, il est possible d’isoler quelques phases majeures consacrées d’abord aux approches quantitatives, puis aux approches localisées et concentrées sur les stratégies des acteurs. Depuis quelques années on assiste au retour aux grandes espaces et au temps long, en proposant des synthèses générales qui prennent en considération l’ensemble du continent européen, en se concentrant sur les dynamiques liées à la parenté. Cette nouvelle anthropologie historique de la parenté revient ainsi à certaines ambitions comparatives de l’histoire de la famille telle qu’elle s’était constituée dans les années 1960 et 1970. Le colloque se fige de réfléchir sur l’intérêt d’analyser les processus régionaux de la famille et de la parenté, saisis dans la longue durée, pour mieux saisir les dynamiques d’ensemble au niveau du continent.

Climat et temps : la science comme culture publique

Communication scientifique et son histoire – III

This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.
