Image, Cinema & Politics: the Avant-Garde Dilemma in the Interwar Period (1918-1936)
In this publication we would like to explore the relation between the post-1918 crisis of the liberal system and the use of art and image as political media including its nationalist, gender and class discourses since they reflect the political and economic transformations of the post-war years. Art and cinema allow us to observe processes such as accelerated urbanisation, electrification and the automobile revolution, the incorporation of women into the waged- labour market or class struggles, all of which fed the insecurity and anxiety of industrialised societies which sought shelter in growing protectionism and corporatism.

L’espace centre-américain révèle constamment sa complexité, c’est pourquoi une première question guide la réflexion de cet appel, à savoir : de quelle manière et avec quels outils pouvons-nous penser les espaces centre-américains contemporains, leur histoire et leur configuration ? Michel Foucault se demande dans sa conférence « Des espaces autres » dans quelle mesure l’époque contemporaine serait probablement celle de l’espace à la différence du XIXe siècle et son obsession avec le temps. Ce tournant géographique nous permet de penser les faits humains et sociaux à partir d’un endroit déterminé et par conséquent la façon dont cet espace est analysé, imaginé ou recréé.

Or is it something that is forever unreachable, something that defines our experience of the present as a perpetual state of deferral and transience?

Le projet du colloque sera d'examiner le regard sur l'Autre, français ou états-uniens de la part de voyageurs mexicains, politiques, intellectuels et anonymes pouur la période 1821-1950 sur la base d'écrits du for intérieur : correspondances, journaux intimes, mémoires, sans exclure les chroniques et les documents publiés dans la presse mexicaine sur la France et les États-Unis de la période considérée.

Thinking Latin American Right-Wings in the 20th Century
This conference is the continuation of two previous conferences held in France (2014) and Argentina (2016) which saw the gradual emergence of a community of researchers working on the questions of identities, ideas, practices and discourses of actors and movements from Latin American rightwing. It is difficult to establish the precise conceptual limits of the rightwing because of the heterogeneity and plurality of the groups and movements that have historically been part of this family and which are thus characterized by the presence of diverse political traditions. It is therefore essential to imagine flexible boundaries when considering rightwing history and taking into account the changes it experienced over time. Our purpose is not to establish canonical definitions, but rather to contribute to set general frameworks for this field of study whose historical relevance and actuality are no longer to be demonstrated, but whose limits and fundamental characteristics are still debated.

Lorsque le XIXe siècle arrivait à sa première moitié, les rives du Rio de la Plata deviennnent le théâtre d’un jeu sophistiqué mené, entre autres, par les populations criollas installées dans le bassin platense, les immigrés récemment arrivés d’horizons divers, les États européens monarchiques, les forces libérales et bonapartistes qui s’y opposent, l’Église, les cercles éclairés anticléricaux, les États américains qui viennent d'être créés. C’est dans cet espace fait de rencontres, de conflits et de mélanges de langues et d’idéaux qu’est né à Montevideo Isidore Ducasse, comte de Lautréamont, auteur d’une œuvre, les Chants de Maldoror, qui s’est révélée être la réécriture d’une tradition et la matière d’un avenir, toujours ouverte à des réinterprétations, à des recréations, à des versions et à des traductions.

The Individual at the Crossroads between the Civilian and Military Worlds
The symposium theme is merely a guideline, a clue for reflection rather than a well-defined subject. It leads us to question the ways through which individuals – soldiers, civilians at the home front or in occupied territories – integrate and conciliate the military dimension on one side (whether it’s their experience at the front or German presence on the streets of their village) and the civil dimension on the other. In addition to the encounter between the civilian and military “worlds”, constituting two separate spheres, we must reflect upon the individual as being at the crossroads between two dimensions, which jointly construct him or her.

The Cold War and Entertainment Television
An essential dimension of the Cold War took place in the realm of ideas and culture. A great deal of work, for example, has been done on cinema, especially with regard to the United States although other nations, both East and West, have received increasing attention. But with certain noteworthy exceptions (primarily in the areas of science fiction and espionage series) relatively little has been done on this subject in relation to television. Yet, television was a technology and popular cultural form that emerged during the Cold War. This project hopes to rectify that absence by providing a forum for examining the impact of the Cold War on entertainment television. We intend to underline the comparative aspect by studying programs from both blocs – without forgetting, of course, the outsize impact of American television.

Operas primas del cine español e iberoamericano contemporáneo (1990-2009)
Colloque coordonné par Nancy Berthier (Université de Paris Est, LISAA EA 4120, France) et Álvaro A. Fernández Reyes (Université de Guadalajara, Mexique) et organisé par l’Université de Paris-Est (EMHIS-LISAA EA 4120), en collaboration avec le REDIC (Red de Investigadores de cine), l’Université de Guadalajara (Mexique), le Colegio de España et le soutien du GRIMH. Ce colloque en espagnol réunit des chercheurs français, mexicains et espagnol autour de la notion de "ópera prima" (premier film), qu'il interroge à partir d'un corpus de documentaires et de fictions récentes (années 90 et 2000) et selon des axes théoriques et métodologiques diversifiés. Hace ya varias décadas que los estudios históricos han trascendido las fronteras nacionales para pensar las modalidades en que los procesos locales se ven afectados por acontecimientos globales. Más recientemente, nuevos enfoques han propuesto escalas de análisis y objetos de estudio que enfatizan los intercambios transnacionales por sobre las historias estrictamente nacionales y las relaciones entre los Estados. La Guerra Fría es un caso paradigmático para examinar las maneras en que un fenómeno político global alteró las dinámicas en todos los rincones del mundo a través de variados fenómenos de transnacionalización. Contemporánea convoca a investigaciones originales que estudien las formas en que actores e instituciones locales o globales circularon a nivel transnacional en esa etapa y afectaron actividades de tipo político, cultural, intelectual y económico en América Latina.
